What Does 5G Need to Improve? Huawei Has Some Ideas

Yep, we’re talking 5G as in the next generation in wireless. Right now most of us know about 4G LTE, but companies like Huawei have been looking to get 5G out the door. 5G is going to be a super fast network, just look at LTE, LTE can go as fast as 150mbps, with LTE-Advanced at 300mbps theoretically. 5G is going to have much faster theoretical speeds, around 10Gbps, which is 10x the speed of Google Fiber that most of us are drooling over. Ken Hu, who is the acting CEO and Deputy Chairman of Huawei Technologies stated “we are at the beginning of the beginning” when talking about what 5G must solve and what it is. Hu wrote a paper that’s over on Light Reading about 5G, titled “The Road to a Super-Connected World”. He states that about 66% of the world still relies on 2G, and 4G is still on it’s initial development. But he still feels that they need to get 5G correct, right now.

What does 5G need to fix? Primarily latency, bandwidth and connectivity. Which has been issues with carriers using 4G LTE. This is why carriers are trying to buy up more and more spectrum. While this isn’t due to the Internet of Things, IoT isn’t going to make it any easier. When we have everything connected to the internet, including your refrigerator. Currently, we are able to control some appliances from our smartphones, which means that latency is going to be a big issue to.

Ken Hu also states that the number of connection a cell site running 5G must manage will be a 7 figure number. He’s also expecting a connected world of over 100 billion devices. Hu says for self-driving cars, and other automated stuff, latency will be under 1 millisecond, which is about 50 times faster than what most of us currently have on 4G. It’ll also have attainable throughput of 10gbps.

Bandwidth will need to be increased too, Mr Hu seems to think that it needs to be increased by at least 500% of what we have now. With over 100 billion connected devices, along with all the data we use for our smartphones, and tablets, we’re definitely going to need more space. Carriers are already seeing that with 4G right now.

It’s probably still a decade or more before we see 5G starting to be deployed – which will likely start in Asia and move west. However, I think Huawei Technologies, Ken Hu hit the nail on the head. Latency, Bandwidth and connectivity are the big things that will need to be fixed in 5G when compared to 4G.
