Samsung’s focus and push into mobile entertainment and gaming became apparent when they first announced the Gear VR virtual reality headset, which aims to bring consumers who have a compatible Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphone a slightly more affordable option for virtual reality compared to something like the Oculus Rift. Samsung was kind enough to send us over a kit of the Gear VR Innovator Edition, which comes with everything you need to dive right into the completely immersive experiences that can be enjoyed on the headset, minus the Galaxy Note 4 of course. Inside the box you’ll end up getting the headset unit itself, the face plate that clips on the front, the head brace that fits over the top of the headset to help secure it during use, a micro fiber cloth to wipe down the inside and outside of the lenses so you can keep them clean, an extra foam face liner, and a microSD card to place inside of the Galaxy Note 4 which you can use to hold all your content from the Oculus Store.
The Gear VR Innovator Edition comes with an optical lens that has a 96 degree field of view so you can really see things in a wide aspect, and it almost feels like you’re inside of the content that you’re enjoying. It also contains multiple sensors including an accelerometer, gyrometer, geomagnetic and proximity sensors, and it has a dial for focal adjustment to cover you whether you’re nearsighted or farsighted. A simple tweak of this dial brings things into focus so you can see things as clear as possible every time. The physical user interface is easily accessible with the volume rocker, back button, and touchpad all on the right side of the headset. Now the Gear VR doesn’t contain a battery, so it draws its power from the battery inside of the Galaxy Note 4 once the phone is plugged into it, which connects through the microUSB port on the front mantle of the headset and is mounted in and secured with the face plate. We’ve spent nearly a week with the Gear VR Innovator Edition playing around with some of the videos and games, and we’ll be bringing you a review of the headset tomorrow, but for now have a look at some of the images below and see what all comes in the package.
