Facebook’s Partial Material Design Inspired UI Refresh Is Currently Being Tested

AH Facebook logo 1.3

Ever since the launch of the official Facebook Android app there were more complaints about the UI on Android compared to its Facebook counterpart on iOS than I can count. That has changed some since Facebook has gotten a UI change in the last year or so, but with Lollipop a good few months under way we have to wonder when Facebook will be moving things over to a new UI inspired by Material Design. As it turns out, the Facebook team seems to be testing out the Material Design refresh as of now,(at least to some degree)and we have to say from what we can see it looks pretty good.

As you can tell from the second image that shows you the different options Facebook would give you when you head to create a new post via the floating action button, there seems to be some visual inspiration here from Google’s Inbox app,(third image)which has the same style of buttons to tap when you go to create a new email from within Inbox. This was one of the things I personally liked about Inbox’s style and Facebook has re-created it rather nicely within their own app. When you hit the floating action button it gives you a few different options like creating a new post, taking a photo, uploading a photo, and adding a location via the “where I am” button.

For now we aren’t sure whether or not Facebook will roll this out to the majority of their users but we can certainly hope that they do. With that being said, since there’s no update having been mentioned there is no time frame of when we can expect Facebook to update their app with a complete Material Design refresh, let alone these few visual touches we can see here in these screenshots. If Facebook decides to make these design changes a permanent thing, you can be sure we’ll be letting people know. If you use Facebook and are seeing these changes on your device, feel free to let us know what you think. Although this isn’t a complete material makeover, it’s a good place to start and might just be the best Facebook UI for the official Android app to date.
