Uber’s Policies On Data Security Are Found To Be Strong After External Review Of Privacy Measures

AH Uber-1

Personal privacy and data isn’t to be taken lightly, and any company that requires your personal information for use of their service generally aims to do the most they can to make sure your data stays safe. Uber claims to be one of those companies as they state they have a strong commitment to the protection and privacy of your personal data. Normally when we hear about Uber a lot of the news has to do with negativity revolving around their surge pricing tactics, or complaints against drivers, or even over their operation in countries or cities where they haven’t yet received legal rights to operate. It seems this time around Uber is actually getting some good news to share, as they have just announced that a six week long external review by global law firm Hogan Lovells resulted in findings that Uber’s Privacy policies are strong, one might say as strong as their commitment to keep your private data actually private.

Uber states that protecting the personal information of riders is a core value for the company, which is good news for anyone that is either a frequent user of Uber or is interested in trying out there services. Uber is upfront about about their mistakes too, acknowledging that they haven’t always gotten things right, and are adapting as they continue to grow as they have done so these past couple of years, where they have expanded on a fairly grand scale from a smaller local service and company to one with a global reach and availability to many people.

While Uber does seem to have good privacy policies in place, that doesn’t mean they don’t have any more room to strengthen them even more and improve upon what they already have set up. During the review, Hogan Lovells made some suggestions to Uber as to how they could execute a plan to bring their Privacy Policy to the next level, which Uber states was reviewed by their leadership team. Further, Uber states that they’ll begin implementing these measures to increase Privacy to higher standards by requiring drivers to receive specialized training on privacy and data security issues. As part of that training Uber will be requiring drivers to stay up to date on all that information with refresher courses as time goes on and should policies change.

In addition Uber is also going to be issuing new public releases of their privacy policies in an attempt to clarify how they use the personal information of riders. The privacy policies have always been available, but according to the review findings it could be easier to understand, so Uber is in the process of making these changes to the policy and will be making them public soon. Lastly Uber will be reinforcing and tightening technical controls so they can make sure user data is only accessible to those employees who are authorized to view it. Uber may have had some missteps, quite a few actually, but they seem to take privacy seriously and they want to ensure that customers know Uber wants to gain their trust and that they value it quite highly.
