Who knew that UK was a land of thieves? I am kidding of course.
But new research shows that even though the United Kingdom has 100% broadband penetration, one in three people in the United Kingdom admit to stealing their neighbor’s Wi-Fi. That is just the number of people who have successfully connected. Almost 40 percent of people admit to just trying.
In London, you better lock your internet up as over 60 percent admit to trying to steal their neighbor’s Wi-Fi and 50 percent were successful using their neighbor’s Wi-Fi.
The biggest reason for the stealing of internet came from people’s dissatisfaction with their own broadband. Those between 35 and 44 were the most likely to steal a neighbor’s connection.
One of the reasons for so many being successful in stealing their neighbor’s Wi-Fi came from people using their names, pet names and birthdays as their login information.
Additionally, the legality of stealing a neighbor’s Wi-Fi in the UK is not as simple as guilty or innocent. The UK’s Computer Misuse Act 1990 implies that it might be illegal if you guessed the password.
The research was conducted by broadband provider Hyperoptic.
