Android Headliner: Has OnePlus Burned it’s 15 Minutes of Fame?

OnePlus has been a pretty popular name in the first half of 2014. They used the tagline “#NeverSettle”, as in they weren’t going to be announcing several devices each year, and there would be no compromises on the hardware nor the software. Which the OnePlus One really doesn’t have any compromises on software or hardware. But the compromises are on the ability to buy the device. Back in April when OnePlus announced the device, it got a ton of reaction and everyone was talking about it. I mean it has a 5.5-inch Full HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, 3100mAh battery, 13MP camera on the back and a 2MP camera on the front and runs Cyanogen 11S. All that for just $349. That’s pretty crazy pricing right there, right? Everyone would be buying a OnePlus One if they actually could, but you need an invite unfortunately.


It’s important to remember that this is typical Chinese marketing. This is what happens in China all the time with their phones and stuff. In fact, Meizu and Xiaomi are pretty popular for only offering their phones for an hour on a certain day and selling out within minutes. Which sounds amazing, but they basically just go ahead and put together a batch of devices and then sell them as soon as they are ready. The only thing is, this doesn’t work well outside of China. We like to be able to buy a phone whenever we want, we don’t want to have to wait for an invite to buy a phone, right?


A Flagship Killer with an invite needed to buy it. Sounds like a flagship killer right? Not. As much as I love my OnePlus One, I just can’t recommend it to anyone. At least until it’s available without an invite. It’s just too much trouble for the OnePlus One. We’ve been running a few articles lately about the OnePlus One, and it’s quite obvious that people are tired of hearing about this device since they can’t get their hands on it. Which I can’t blame them, and I’m hoping they learn from these mistakes for their next device launch. We’ve heard that they are working on the OnePlus Two, so hopefully this one will be actually available and not on an invite system.


Don’t get me wrong, I do really like the OnePlus One. And I wish them the best of luck in the future, but I think that they burned a lot of people with the OnePlus One launch. So hopefully they can get this right in the near future. How many of you are still interested in OnePlus?
