Ever since Google released the Chromecast SDK, we’ve seen a massive increase in the number of apps that support Google’s media dongle. While some of these apps are just from small developers adding support, Google has also partnered directly with several big name developers and companies to bring us more apps.
With that in mind, Google has now taken to its Chrome blog to formally introduce a few new apps. For sports fans, the big news here is that the WatchESPN app and Major League Soccer MatchDay app have both added support for Chromecast. Of course to use either app you’ll need to subscribe to their services directly or (in the case of WatchESPN) you’ll need your login credentials for your existing cable service.
For those that aren’t into sports, popular anime show app Crunchyroll has introduced support for the Chromecast as well. Last but not least, Google+ will add a Chromecast icon that allows you to beam over videos and photos.
While the Chromecast might not be as impressive as the Fire TV or as app-heavy as the Roku, it does seem to be the gift that keeps on giving as its functionality continues to evolve with nearly every passing day. Sure, the Chromecast isn’t perfect but it’s low price-tag and developer-friendly nature still makes it one of the best choices for those looking to bring smart TV-like functionality into their living rooms.
