Google is unbundling its Drive productivity app, with new dedicated apps launching today that will let you edit and view documents, spreadsheets, and presentations even when you are not online.
The new Docs and Sheets are now available in the Play Store (as well as on the App Store for iOS users), while Slides is said to be coming soon.
Google’s justification for releasing these standalone apps is to “make it easier for you to quickly find, edit and create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on the go”. If you choose not to install the apps, you will be prompted to do so over the following days, when you open a file in Drive. You’ll still be able to view and organize documents through Drive, just like before.
Overall, functionality seems to remain the same in the new apps, compared to Drive. The biggest difference is that you get a list of recently accessed docs/sheets/slides on the app’s default screen, which is nice for getting around large number of files. The top bar is colored (a growing trend with Google’s apps) and the side menu contains a convenient link to Drive. The apps work offline, so connectivity issues won’t hinder your creative impulses.
