HTC on Target to Update Unlocked One M9 to Android 6.0, One A9 to Android 6.0.1 This Month

As stated in a tweet from HTC’s Mo Versi, the company is on target to roll out Android 6.0 “Marshmallow” to the unlocked One M9, and Android 6.0.1 to the One A9 later this month. 

For One A9 users, the update to Android 6.0.1 will also include the updated selection of emoji that Google recently released for select Nexus devices. Thankfully for One A9 owners, though, they have already been on Android 6.0, enjoying all of the new features offered by Marshmallow.

On the other hand, One M9 users have been waiting since early October to know when they can expect the update. And as noted by HTC, this is for the unlocked models, not the carrier variants.

When these updates begin to roll, we will be sure to share the news for owners.

Samsung Says Verizon’s Advanced Calling 2.0 Arrives Tomorrow

Tomorrow, thanks to an update for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, Verizon will introduce WiFi Calling as a part of its new Advanced Calling 2.0. At least that’s what Samsung has led us to believe. 

According to support docs for each phone’s impending update that were posted to Samsung’s website today, we get changelogs that describe Verizon’s newest version of Advanced Calling. Each phone will be introduced to the new Advanced Calling 2.0 package that features not only WiFi Calling (VoWiFi), but enhanced conference calling as well. That appears to be all that’s new this time around.

Advanced Calling 2.0 will expand on the solid base that 1.0 built, which was HD Calling and Video Calling over Verizon’s LTE network. Those features are available to a number phones through their stock dialer and are free to Verizon customers with supported phones. You can see those phones here.

We reached out to Verizon for comment on Advanced Calling 2.0 and will update this post if we learn more.

The updates will arrive as G920VVRU4BOK7 for the Galaxy S6 and G925VVRU4BOK7 for the Galaxy S6 Edge.

Adobe’s Lightroom Mobile for Android is Now Free to Use

Adobe Lightroom, one of our most-used photo editing tools here at DL, is now free to use on Android devices without a creative cloud subscription. A similar update that made the photo editing service free for iOS, arrived back in October. 

With Adobe Lightroom, and no need for a paid subscription, Adobe says that “anyone can take advantage of the organizational, editing, and sharing abilities” of this powerful tool. For those not familiar, Lightroom lets you edit photos with a solid set of tools, then share them with a variety of services. You can revert edits at any time, but also copy edits across multiple photos. Again, it’s an awesome service if you deal with lots of photos and need to edit them quickly.

If you pay for a Creative Cloud subscription, you get more features, like the ability to organize, edit, and share photos across mobile, web, and desktop, which includes photo edits. To dive into those sets of features, I’ll leave the video below for you to watch.

Google Safe Browsing Now Protects Hundred of Millions of Chrome Users on Android

Google’s Safe Browsing, the security service behind Chrome that protects you as you cruise the internet by warning you of potentially harmful or dangerous sites, is now protecting millions of uses on Chrome for Android. Google announced the availability of the service this morning, noting that you are liking already covered by it, assuming you have Chrome 46 or higher installed. 

To verify that you have Safe Browsing, open Chrome, head into Settings>Privacy and look for the option shown above, and make sure you have the box checked for “Safe Browsing.”

With that box checked, you can browse the internet safer than ever on your Android device, knowing that Google is constantly on the lookout for the bad guys of the web. Should you happen upon a site that has been deemed unsafe, Google will warn you with an image similar to the one below. If you see that, it might be good to back on out and find another source.

Google Authenticator Receives New Icon, UI Improvements, Android Wear Support

Google’s Authenticator app received a major update this morning, bringing with it a revamped UI, fancy new icon based on Material Design, and a fair share of bug fixes. Before this update, the app was living in the past, not having received a noticeable update since July, 2013, according to AppBrain. I guess Google lives by the motto, don’t fix what ain’t broke. 

As mentioned in the app’s changelog on Google Play, Google has built in a redesigned icon for fans of Material Design, and the entire interface for the app has also received a facelift to the Material standards. In addition, support for Android Wear users has been baked directly into the application.

Dropbox Shutting Down Mailbox and Carousel Early Next Year

In early 2016, Dropbox will shutdown Mailbox and Carousel permanently, the company made official this morning. Mailbox, first acquired by Dropbox in 2013 and then launched for Android in 2014, became quite the popular email client for users on multiple platforms, but apparently, Dropbox is looking for a more streamlined experience, and we should see many top features from both Mailbox and Carousel built into the Dropbox application. 

To be exact, Mailbox will shut its digital doors on February 26, while Carousel will close down March 31 of next year. Dropbox released multiple letters to users that explained the situation, with each of them stressing the need for a streamlined, convenient experience for users moving forward.

Written in Mailbox’s farewell letter, “As we deepened our focus on collaboration, we realized there’s only so much an email app can do to fundamentally fix email. We’ve come to believe that the best way for us to improve people’s productivity going forward is to streamline the workflows that generate so much email in the first place.”

When Mailbox launched for Android, it was one of our favorite applications, and we wrote about it countless times. We even declared it was one of the top 10 apps of 2014. As of today, with Google’s Inbox and updated Gmail apps, we don’t use it as much anymore, but without Mailbox’s UI and awesome features, we may have never gotten better apps from Google. The Mailbox team sort of started a mobile email revolution, and for that, we thank them.

Sad day, for sure.
