Verizon Giving Away 200 DROID Turbo 2 Phones Through ‘DROID Seeker’ Game

If you want to try winning 1 of 200 DROID Turbo 2 phones for free from Verizon, you can have some fun with a game called DROID Seeker on the carrier’s Tumblr page. Exclusive to existing Verizon customers, players must search through a dark virtual city, looking for a hidden DROID device. 

To play, you must sign up on the #WhyNotWednesday Tumblr page tomorrow starting at 12pm EDT (9am PDT). Once you are verified as a Verizon customer, you are then placed into a queue for a chance to play DROID Seeker. When it is your turn to play, you will be notified. As soon as you log in, you have just 30 seconds to search through the city to find one of the hidden devices. If you find the device and tap on the icon in time, you will win one of the 200 phones up for grabs.

Note, when you do sign up to play, you will need to enter in your Verizon phone number, in addition to a Twitter account.

Tomorrow, enter here at 12pm EDT.

After posting our unboxing, we realized that we had a whole bunch of photos of the new DROID Turbo 2 and DROID MAXX 2 that we had yet to post, including some of the Moto Maker options for the Turbo 2, should you choose the 64GB model and go the  customization route. T-Mobile Hosting UnCarrier X Event on November 10 in Los Angeles

Announced today, T-Mobile is hosting an UnCarrier X event, set to take place on November 10 in Los Angeles, CA. T-Mobile’s post regarding the event gives no details or insight as to what we might expect, but the flyer does state, “We Never Hit Pause.” 

According to a few T-Mobile fans on Twitter, they happen to think T-Mobile will announce a type of “Video Freedom” service, much like T-Mobile did with Music Freedom. Music Freedom allows users of select music streaming services to listen to unlimited amounts of music, not counting towards their total data usage per month. While the idea of Video Freedom is cool, we will likely have to wait until November 10 to hear what T-Mobile plans on unveiling.

Google Announces the ASUS OnHub WiFi Router, Priced at $220

Google introduced a new OnHub WiFi router this morning, this time produced by ASUS. The other OnHub router, currently available for $199, is made by TP-Link. The ASUS OnHub will be available for sale on November 3 for $220, from what should be a solid list of retailers. 

What makes the ASUS-made OnHub different? Well, according to Google, this router features Wave Control, which lets you boost the WiFi speed for a particular device by simply waving your hand over the top of the OnHub unit.

For all OnHub devices, ASUS and TP-Link, Google will soon send out an OTA update to units, bringing a new smart antenna algorithm. This update will allow the router to intelligently select the best connection for a device, wherever it may be inside a home. This update will hit existing OnHub devices manually, with no need for the owner to install it.

Pre-orders for the ASUS OnHub are now live on Newegg, with additional retailers opening up pre-orders soon.

Google Play Music to Offer Podcasts!

Google announced this afternoon that it is ready to start offering podcasts on Google Play Music. How awesome is that? Soon, assuming we get approved, you will be able to catch the Droid Life Show through Google Play Music, instead of using whatever other podcast app you had attached yourself to. And not that other podcast apps are bad, but this means you will have a one-stop shop for all your audio needs. 

Google says that it is opening up a podcast portal today to podcasters, so that in the near future, their shows will be available on Play Music. Shows will be searchable, but also “will connect new listeners with podcasts based on what they’re doing, how they’re feeling, or what they’re interested in.”

We have already submitted the DL Show and are now “under review.” Hopefully, as Google goes live with podcasts on Play Music, you will not only get the DL Show day one, but your other favorite podcasts too.

Motorola Talks “Making of” ShatterShield, Shatteproof Displays, and the Turbo 2

Are we skeptical of Motorola’s claim that the DROID Turbo 2’s display is shatterproof? Yeah, a little. But the good news there is that we get to test the hell out of it. In fact, I just dropped the phone off the table I’m sitting at, just to be sure. And yep, it’s still not shattered. 

Motorola is also putting some weight behind this shatterproof idea, which they are calling ShatterShield. They are giving the Turbo 2 a 4-year guarantee against shatters or cracks and are even letting you replace the top protective layer of their ShatterShield system, should it appear to have cosmetic issues.

The whole system is built on 5 layers, according to Motorola:

  1. It starts with a rigid aluminum core that provides structural integrity and durability.
  2. On top of that, we’ve added in a stunning AMOLED flexible display. Using a flexible display absorbs shock and makes it possible to flex during a drop versus breaking like most screens.
  3. Then, a dual touch layer with redundancy was created to help it survive accidents. Often, after a drop, the touch layer can go bad and your touch doesn’t work as well. So we‘ve added a failsafe mechanism.
  4. The next layer is the interior lens which provides a clear protective shield that won’t crack or shatter.
  5. Lastly, we topped it off with an exterior lens that has a unique hardcoat that helps protect the display against normal wear and tear.

That sounds like a lot of layers and I’m worried that they will take away from a beautiful display, but that’s just another piece to this phone that we get to test.

Either way, Motorola seems to be pretty proud of this whole idea. And rightfully so. Let’s just hope it can stand up to the hype, because phone display problems are real.

DROID Turbo 2 and MAXX 2 Unboxing and Tour!

Now that the DROID Turbo 2 (right) and DROID MAXX 2 (left) are official, we have had a chance to spend some time with each, thanks to Verizon. In the video below, you’ll see an unboxing of each, along with quick overviews and an even quicker comparison to one another. 

My initial impressions of each are sort of that they are familiar phones. The new Turbo 2 is a lot like the Moto X Pure Edition, only a bit wider and with a giant chin. But the soft-touch texture on its backside, along with its software, Motorola dimple, and camera housing, all make for a phone that isn’t exactly new to my hand. That’s not me discounted it, it’s just that this phone feels very familiar.

The same goes for the new MAXX 2, because this is basically just the Moto X Play, only with DROID branding. It actually feels a bit better in hand than the Turbo 2, because its frame is slightly smaller and nestles into your hand much like the Moto X Pure does.

Both phones seem to be built well, which shouldn’t shock you, since these were made by Motorola.

We look forward to spending more time with each over the coming weeks. For now, I’ll leave you with this!
