Galaxy Note 5 Unboxing and First Impressions!

Samsung has done the Galaxy Note 5 launch right. Instead of announcing the phone and then making us wait a month or more before we could buy it, they announced it and then made it almost immediately available for pre-order with an in-store arrival date of just a week later. For many, pre-orders have already arrived on doorsteps. This is how all phone launches should be done, if you ask us.

Now that we are back from Samsung’s NYC event and have one in house, it’s time to get to reviewing it. First, we thought we would do a quick Galaxy Note 5 unboxing to get the juices flowing. This way, you all get to see the beginning of our journey with this phone as a daily deivce, another tour of it in an environment not filled with a few hundred other journalists, and if our impressions have changed within the last few days.

T-Mobile Skipping Galaxy Note 5 Pre-Orders, Purchase Device Starting Tomorrow

T-Mobile’s CEO, the one and only John Legere, announced today through Twitter that the company would be skipping the pre-order process entirely for the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+, and instead, will accept orders for the device beginning tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6am PST. Once your order goes through, Legere states that T-Mobile will ship your device, “ASAP.”

Samsung made a great move, making this device available shortly after announcement, allowing the hype to continue and not die out. Those who ordered the phone through AT&T and Verizon are already receiving their orders, delighting many who had hoped Samsung would not wait long to launch the device following the unveiling.

Official Android Marshmallow Statue Reveal

We know that you have been keeping up with all of today’s Android 6.0 Marshmallow talk, including our ongoing list of “What’s new,” the new boot animation, behind the scenes video of the name unveiling, download links for the latest preview, and the new wallpapers, but there was still one item we have all been waiting for – the official statue reveal video.

That video is now live. It features a bunch of Googlers waiting around for the statue’s sheet to be pulled, so that they can all snap pictures and snack on whatever the treat is underneath. Even with their factory screen protectors on, Googlers always seem to enjoy the occasion.

Mmmm, marshmallows.

Google Intros Dedicated Hangouts Webpage for Calls and Messages

Google now has a dedicated web URL for Hangouts users, with the service now residing at http://ift.tt/13QW17L. Here, you can access all of your chat information, start up new messages, find contacts, and place calls through the service.

It’s basically a glorified extension, something that already exists inside of Gmail and for Chrome Browser users, but hey, more choices! 

In the navigation drawer, you can find links to where you can download Hangouts for your chosen platform, such as Chrome OS, iOS, and Android. Although, if you are reading this, I assume you are on Android and already have Hangouts installed.

Go play with it. It’s pretty.

Weather Network Launches Live App for Android TV

The Weather Network launched an official application for the Android TV platform today, bringing live weather and even traffic updates directly to your HDTV. The app displays a forecast when not in use, giving you accurate information at a glance. When the app is opened, you can view detailed weather information as close as 0.6 miles of where you are using a US zip code. 

Other features include radar and traffic flow maps, allowing users to keep an eye on local traffic conditions, as well as a Voice Control functionality that grants you access to weather, videos, photos, and other features by using your gorgeous speaking voice.

The app is free to download from Google Play directly to your Android TV set-top box, so have at it.

Features

  • IP targeted localized forecasts: Available for both the Live Channel and interactive app, personalized and localized forecasts are available, showing current and upcoming weather conditions.
  • PointCast technology: Available for both the Live Channel and interactive app, PointCast technology provides weather information as close as 0.6 miles of where you are using a US zip code.
  • Enhanced weather content: Current, Hourly, 36 Hours and 14 Day forecasts are provided for a user’s favorite locations.
  • Video gallery: A collection of video on demand clips, including a Global Force of Nature video series, showcase images of the latest active and major weather events happening around the world.
  • Weather, Radar and Traffic Flow maps: With support from pan and zoom functionality, users can keep an eye on up-to-date weather, radar and traffic maps.
  • Voice control: Using simple voice commands, weather, videos and photos are searchable via voice activation.

Download: New Android 6.0 Wallpapers (Marshmallow Preview 3)

In Preview 3 of Android 6.0, Google included a handful of new wallpapers, all of which we have for you below. Some of the new wallpapers will look like releases from the past because of their aerial views, but Google also mixed in new colors and textures into many.

There are 9 wallpapers in total. You’ll find four of them below, along with a .zip full of all 9.

How to: Turn on System UI Tuner in Android 6.0 Marshmallow Preview 3

The System UI Tuner that was first introduced in Android M’s preview 1 and 2 is back again in Android 6.0’s preview 3, only it’s not as easy to find as it once was. In fact, Google has completely hidden the setting unless you perform a secret action to enable it. 

To enable System UI Tuner in Android 6.0 Marshmallow preview 3, pull down your notification shade and long-press on the Settings gear icon for up to 5 seconds. Once you let go, you should see a pop-up with the message “Congrats! System UI Tuner has been added to Settings.” And as that message suggests, you can head into settings, scroll to the bottom, and find an option for System UI Tuner.

With it enabled, you can then tweak your quick toggle tiles, add or remove items from the status bar, and even enter Demo Mode.

To turn it back off, tap the action overflow menu from within the System UI Tuner section and choose to turn it off. You can also long-press on the Settings icon again for 5 seconds.
