Android Distribution Updated for August 2015, Lollipop Jumps to 18%

Google took the month of July off, but today, went ahead and updated the Android OS distribution numbers for August.

In the two months since they last updated, Lollipop has seen a sizable jump from 11.6% to over 18%. Other than that, there hasn’t been much movement. KitKat barely moved up to 39.3% (from 39.2%), while Jelly Bean (37.4% to 33.6%), Ice Cream Sandwich (5.1% to 4.1%), and Gingerbread (5.6% to 4.6%) all dropped.

You can see June’s numbers here.

Chrome Beta for Android Updates to V45 With Custom Tabs, Updated Media Controls and Bookmarks

Google is pushing an update to Chrome Beta (v45.0.2454.21) this afternoon that introduces a couple of tweaks, along with a feature called “Chrome Custom Tabs.” Chrome Custom Tabs are better explained by Google here, but basically they allow customization in Chrome tabs by developers (toolbar color, enter/exit animations, custom actions to overflow menu). We’re still waiting for the update to arrive, so once we have it, we’ll see if we can’t show you a better visual representation of Custom Tabs.

The new build updates media playback controls and the bookmarks interface, and also fixes bugs.

What’s New

  • Chrome Custom Tabs
  • Updated media playback controls
  • Updated Bookmarks interface
  • Better logging for feedback reports
  • Barrels of bug fixes and performance improvements.

Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ Renders Have Arrived

This past weekend, @evleaks posted the above press renders to his Twitter account. They are of the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+. Not only do we get a solid look at what to expect from the exterior, but Evan also posted along a few specs for the Galaxy Note 5.

According to the tweet, we may see the Galaxy Note 5 feature a 5.66″ QHD display, Exynos 7420 processor, 4GB of RAM, 16MP back-facing camera, 5MP front-facing camera, and run Android 5.1.1 at launch. One thing missing from the list is a microSD card slot, which aligns with previous reports we have posted.

As we can see from the renders, the Note 5 looks similar to the Galaxy S6, but of course, is larger and features a S-Pen stylus. The S6 Edge+, on the other hand, is really just a larger Galaxy S6 Edge.

We are coming up on August 13, the date Samsung has scheduled to unveil these two new devices in New York City. We will be on-hand in NYC to bring you all of the coverage.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 on Sprint Gets Update With Stagefright Fix, Android 5.1.1 Too

The Sprint variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is getting an update today that introduces a fix for the Stagefright security flaw that shocked the Android world last week. To date, this is the first phone to get this fix that we are aware of, though you should expect a whole bunch of other updates to arrive over the next few weeks.

The update weighs in at around 615MB, so we’re talking about a substantial update here that also brings the phone up to Android 5.1.1. The full changelog is below.

  • Android version 5.1.1, Lollipop OS Upgrade
  • Message Waiting Indicator fix
  • Security fix (Stagefright)
  • Misc. bug fixes.

As a recap, the Stagefright bug allowed someone with your phone number to send you an MMS that when played (potentially without you even knowing in the background) could access all sorts of private information. It affects most Android devices, and unlike most security findings on Android, is actually quite serious.

We can’t help but applaud Samsung and Sprint for pushing this out. They managed to beat Google, who has yet to send any sort of patch to any of its Nexus line.

This Video is Funny, If You Like Laughing at Apple Fankids

What happens when you load up a fake iPhone with Android, tell people that it’s running iOS 9, and ask for their reactions? You get the best of Apple fankids talking about how everything is awesome because Apple made it. It’s the best kind of comedy for smartphone nerds, just like when Jimmy Kimmel has people react to the “new” iPhone that is really just last year’s iPhone. People say ridiculous things because in their minds, Apple can do no wrong and always does everything right.

Why is this better than Android? “I dunno, Apple is so chill,” says one of the participants. This version of Android on a fake iPhone is also apparently so much better because it’s “just a lot faster and smoother.” Mmhmm, I’m sure it is. Even an admitted “Samsung fanboy” in the clip is amazed by its beauty (poor TouchWiz). But in the end, at least one person says that this is the best because “I just think Apple is always better.” And that’s that.
