AT&T Pushes Out Needed Update to HTC One M9, Includes Camera Fixes

AT&T is now seeding out a massive update for the HTC One M9, the same one that was made available to overseas models for a few weeks now. This update, which we would say is incredibly important, features fixes for the camera, thermal improvements, and other various fixes.

The version number for the update is 1.32.502.31, and as stated, the update should increase the performance of the phone’s camera, which has been said to be not so good. And for the “thermal improvements,” we can only guess this means HTC has found a way to decrease the heat output from the Snapdragon 810 processor; the same that has been cause for slight concern to potential buyers. No, it’s not burning anyone’s face off, but the phone does get a little toasty.

The update is out now, so go check your One M9 models on AT&T.

Once updated, let us know how it treats you.

Adobe Lightroom Update Brings DNG Raw File and MicroSD Card Support

Adobe recognizes that a lot of people, professionals included, are turning to mobile devices to get a lot of their photo editing work done. With that said, the latest update to Lightroom from Adobe has hit Google Play, bringing with it a few important features for the pros among us.

In the update, Lightroom now supports DNG raw files, which will greaten the amount of tweaks photographers are able to do after the fact. In addition, where you can make edits has improved, as Android tablets are apparently just now receiving support for the app.

Lastly, Adobe threw in microSD card support, meaning you can edit files from and save files to your expandable storage. This is a good thing, considering that megapixel size on mobile devices is growing, which leads to much larger files that eats at your onboard storage.

If you fancy yourself a professional, and want to get a bit of work done while on the go, check out the update. Do note, you will need an Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan subscription to utilize these changes.

Android 5.1.1 Factory Images Posted for Nexus Player

Just as we thought it would, Android 5.1.1 is beginning to hit Google’s site in the form of factory images. The first of which is now available for the Nexus Player, build number LMY47V.

In terms of what changes, it is likely that the jump to Android 5.1.1 will bring minor bug fixes and tweaks. Nothing crazy. But hey, any update is a good update.

As more devices show up, we will post them.

Here a Bunch of LG G4 Camera Sample Shots

Next week on April 28, the G4 will be announced by LG in New York City. Even though we don’t know exactly when the phone will be made available on carriers here in the US, that isn’t stopping LG from teasing its new features, such as its improved 5.5″ QHD display, as well as the 16MP rear-facing shooter.

In the latest piece of promo material, LG puts the phone into the hands of Colby Brown, a landscape/travel photographer based out of Colorado. To highlight the G4’s professional capability, it appears LG sent Colby all around this beautiful country of ours, having him do his best to show off the G4’s camera prowess. What Colby is able to produce is quite breathtaking, especially since this is a smartphone we are talking about.

Colby talks about the camera’s wide aperture, being f/1.8, saying that it is just like some of his professional photography gear. With this, he is able to produce better images in darker environments. Continuing, he highlights the Pro mode that will come on the G4, allowing mobile shooters to adjust ISO, White Balance, and even shutter speed when taking shots. While other high-end mobile phones feature ISO and White Balance adjustments on the fly, such as the Galaxy S6, the ability to tweak the camera’s shutter speed will hopefully lead to stunning shots of light trails and starry nights.

Below, we have placed a few of Colby’s shots that are taken with the G4, according to LG. There is no exact mention on the post whether these images were enhanced in any way, but for LG’s sake, let’s hope they were not. Once you view the images, check out the video below, that shows off Colby using the G4 in the field, without ever actually showing the phone itself.

Is the camera in a smartphone a huge deal breaker for you? If so, are you excited for the LG G4?

Starting Today, Google Prioritizes Mobile Friendly Websites in Mobile Search Results

Because an increasing number of Google searches happen these days from mobile devices (read: smartphones), Google has decided to reward those who have mobile-friendly websites with higher search rankings. Starting today, Google is expanding its use of “mobile-friendliness” as a ranking signal in its algorithm of searches made from phones and potentially placing a mobile-friendly site much higher in results than one that isn’t so friendly.

What does this mean for you?

Hopefully, better search results that lead to websites that look great on your phone without you needing to do a thing. Hopefully, you won’t have to scroll horizontally anymore…ever. Hopefully, you won’t have to tap-to-zoom or pinch things or hit a zoom button. Hopefully, you will just be able to read content that is formatted properly for your screen size. Like when you visit Droid Life.

That’s right, we became super mobile-friendly a long, long time ago with our responsive design. Whether you are on a desktop or tablet or phone, our site automatically resizes itself to fit your screen size. It’s pretty awesome really. And as you can see from that image at the top of this post, Google knows we are “Mobile-friendly.” Yay!

With that in mind, this change doesn’t mean that you won’t still find websites that aren’t mobile-friendly. Google still considers the “intent” of a search query as very important, so if a mobile-friendly site has bad content, you could still get the site with the most relevant info first, even if it isn’t going to look great on your phone. Google isn’t going to just blindly start tossing out search results that are unrelated or garbage just because they have a pretty mobile site. The goal is to find you the best info. The big deal today is that “mobile-friendliness” is now very important when searching from phones, but is by no means the most important – it’s just one of many factors that go into search algorithms.

Also, this has nothing to do with the results you see when searching from a tablet or your computer.

What does this mean for web people, like us, here at Droid Life?

See, it’s people like us or other web developers or website owners that care about today’s change because it could have a big impact on our traffic through search results. Hopefully, since we have been mobile-friendly for well over a year now, that Google will play nice with us. And that’s all you really need to know. We will keep doing what we do every day. But maybe, just maybe, this will grab the attention of non-mobile-friendly websites and prompt them to get their site ready for the future.

If you want to know more, be sure to read through this FAQ.

In the end, this graphic sums it all up nicely.

Japanese Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge doesn’t come with Samsung branding, goes on sale April 23rd

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Japan NTT Docomo

There are few companies that can boast a global brand presence as big as Samsung’s. The South Korean giant has their hands in just about everything these days, with televisions, washer machines, and smartphones accounting for their billions in revenue every year.

But despite their best marketing efforts, Samsung may not have much pull in Japan, where total mobile sales account for barely 5.6% of smartphones sold in the country. While it’d be easy to assume this could have something to do with the Japanese mostly favoring national brands like Sharp, Fujitsu, or Sony, keep in mind Apple occupies nearly 40.8% of the market. In any case, that’s not about to stop Samsung from who will be bringing their new Galaxy S6 flagship to the country on April 23rd.

What’s interesting is Samsung’s branding — at least for the NTT Docomo model — has been completely stripped from the phone, as pointed out by The Korea Herald. The S6 Edge model is completely devoid of any Samsung branding on the front, with only the carrier name and “Galaxy” branding on the back. The regular S6 model has Docomo’s branding on the front (where the Samsung logo would normally go) and once again, only “Galaxy” on the back. No S6, no S6 Edge — none of that.

According to Samsung, they feel the Galaxy brand has been “well established in Japan” but declined to comment further. While it’s not uncommon to find Japanese carrier Docomo de-brand handsets in favor of their own logo (it was the same case for last year’s Samsung Galaxy S5 and even their Note line in Japan), you’ll find Sony’s Xperia line was left alone. Go figure.
