Android Epic App Battles: CM Security Antivirus V.S. Lookout Security and Antivirus

With the state of mobile security the way that it is these days and an ever increasing need to protect our personal data and information, it can’t hurt to have an antivirus app installed on your device. More times than not you won’t have need for it, but better to be safe than sorry in this type of situation. There are a great many choices for antivirus apps on Android at this point, many of them top companies in the field who already have years of experience in antivirus software for PC. That’s where this battle takes us, into the world of antivirus apps, more specifically between two of the most popular on Android, CM Security and Lookout Security. Which one deserves the crown though? Does one serve your needs better than the other? Do you simply have preference for other reasons? We’ll gloss over a few features of each and let you decide in the G+ poll which antivirus app you like best.

CM Security Antivirus

CM Security Antivirus may not have been around as long as some of the other antivirus apps on Android, but that has made no difference as it has quickly gained a loyal following and a massive one at that. This app from Cheetah Mobile who also developed the Clean Master app has been installed somewhere between 100 million and 500 million times, and with good reason as it offers some great features. One of the newest and likely most popular is the vault feature which lets you hide your photos from prying eyes, and of course there’s the antivirus engine which scans incoming apps for potentially malicious content.

It also has a nifty intruder selfie feature, which snaps a photo of anyone who may be trying to get into an app you have locked with the Applock feature, allowing you to catch someone in the act of snooping. Then of course you have the Applock, which lets you lock apps, settings and things like the photo gallery or specific files on the phone. When it comes to the antivirus feature, it doesn’t just scan new apps coming in but it also lets you fix any system vulnerabilities. It also has the cleaner and booster features of Clean Master.

Lookout Security & Antivirus

Lookout Security and Antivirus is another popular antivirus app that has been around for a few years now, and it offers up just what you’d expect from an app focused on bringing you better mobile security. It scans incoming apps for malicious content and alerts you if it finds anything, and will give you the ability to fix vulnerabilities caused by those apps thanks to the continuous over the air protection.

It also allows you to backup and download your contacts and save them to your Google accounts, and you can later download them to you computer so you can transfer them to different phones or tablets, although most smartphones these days already have the capability to transfer contacts automatically but Lookout can back them up for you in the event that your device gets broken. Perhaps one of the more useful features is the “find my phone” feature, which uses the last pinged location of your device to help you track it down if it’s lost or stolen. It also helps block dangerous URL’s, and advises you of the personal data that is accessible by other installed apps. Should your device be lost or stolen you can also log into your Lookout account from another device or machine and remotely wipe the data or remotely lock it down.

iHeartRadio Update Brings in Support for Android Auto

Today, iHeartRadio was updated. And with that update they brought in support for Android Auto. So now you can use Google Play Music, Spotify or iHeartRadio for music. iHeartRadio was one of the headlining apps when Google announced Android Auto not too long ago. With the headphones icon on the bottom of the Android Auto interface, you can switch between iHeartRadio and a slew of other apps.

As expected, the iHeartRadio app does look almost the same as the Google Play Music app, on Android Auto. The only real difference here is the color. Instead of orange highlights that Google Play Music uses, iHeartRadio uses red highlights and it actually looks really awesome.

According to iHeartRadio’s description in the Play Store (and yes they did update the description and Changelog, good job iHeartRadio):

“When you plug your smartphone into a vehicle equipped with Android Auto, iHeartRadio joins you for the ride. Access your favorite stations wherever your travels take you! For more information, please visit http://android.com/auto.”

Currently, only a few automakers have Android Auto in their current crop of cars. Although they are not shipping them just yet. Why? It’s due to Google. When I spoke with Hyundai at the North American International Auto Show last month, they said that Google hadn’t finished developing Android Auto, but as soon as they do, they will be shipping their Accent, and a few other models with Android Auto capabilities. Additionally, cars with the larger screen will get updates to support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for those interested in that.

Great to see some more apps getting updated to Android Auto support. I wonder how many others we will see support Android Auto in the next year or so? Hopefully PocketCasts and Soundcloud get updated real soon, so everyone can listen to the AH Show in the car.

The Matchstick Streaming Stick Running Firefox OS Gets Delayed Launch Date

When it comes to streaming media devices you have plenty of options to choose from at this point. Google’s Chromecast easily leads the charge into our living rooms, but there are other devices that deliver an enjoyable experience as well like the Fire TV Stick, the Roku 3500R, and soon to be the Mastchstick, a streaming stick that was funded through kickstarter last year which will be running on Mozilla’s Firefox OS. The unfortunate thing right now is that the Matchstick has apparently hit a snag. A snag known as a delayed shipping date that has been bumped out by a period of six months.

This is probably a little bit of sad news for those who were eager to get their hands on the $25 device, but should you decide you really don’t want to wait that long you aren’t left without any other selections that could meet the same needs. The thing about Matchstick that might have people interested is the claims of more powerful performance than that of Chromecast, as well as a slightly lower price tag, and a more open platform approach. When the Matchstick launches, you’ll be able to stream all kinds of video content to it from various different devices or machines, and it also supports streaming from a decent selection of different apps one can use with Chromecast currently.

It’ll also let you stream or cast from the browser if you’re using Firefox, similar to the way you can cast from your Chrome browser to Chromecast, although hopefully it works better than the Chromecast’s browser option otherwise it likely won’t be getting much use. The Matchstick was supposed to start shipping to buyers and backers this month, but it looks like those who had helped fund the project will have to wait till august. Look at the bright side, it’ll be during the summer time and you’ll probably have more time to watch all the videos want. As for the reasons for the delay, it has to do with a WiFi related bug and switching out hardware for upgraded parts, more specifically making the jump to a quad-core processor. So, while the Matchstick isn’t quite available yet, if you don’t have any sort of device similar to this and were wanting one now, you have those few other options we mentioned above.

[APK Teardown] Upcoming Google Play Services v6.7 Schedules Android One OTAs For Off-Peak Hours, Adds Experimental Activity-Based Personal Unlocking

As the resident teardown guy, Update Wednesday was a huge letdown this week. After slicing and dicing a dozen or so apks, all I saw were bug fixes, minor adjustments, and updates with full changelogs. Come on Google, I can't write about the neat stuff if none of the secrets are allowed to leave Mountain View. Fortunately, I did get to look at an unreleased version of Play Services, and there are a few interesting things to take away from it.

Test drive a Samsung Gear VR this Sunday at select Best Buy locations

If you’ve been dying to play around with the Samsung Gear VR, but didn’t have the stomach to fork out $200 for it — at least not without first playing with it — here’s your chance. Starting this Sunday, February 8th, select Best Buy retail locations across the US of A will be offering free heads-on demos for anyone who’s been curious about virtual reality headsets, but still wasn’t sure if it was for them.

Our own Kevin Krause was a skeptic, but later fell in love with his Samsung Gear VR, raving about it in his full review. The Gear VR, currently only available in the “Innovator Edition,” takes advantage of a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 — the only phone that is officially compatible with it at the moment (although there are workarounds) — to display dual-images to each eye, using a combination of the phone’s sensors to simulate movement. Samsung even has an app for watching immersive 3D videos via their Milk VR app but if “adult” entertainment is more your thing, some companies are already working on that too.

To check and see if your local Best Buy store is offering free demos, check out Best Buy’s landing page here . Right now there’s about 68 stores on the list, but Samsung recommends contacting your local store (even if listed) before blindly heading out, as locations are subject to change. The Samsung Gear VR seems to have struck a chord with consumers, with Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe mentioning that they sold much more than they had expected. If only Google Glass caught on as quickly.
