Android Police Holiday Gift Guide 2014: The Stuff You Want, Only Newer

th

Last year, we put out a gift guide with all of our recommendations for the holiday season, but we made one mistake: we released it on December 20th, just five days before Christmas. What were we thinking? I honestly have no idea. This year, we decided to try to be a bit more helpful and put something out at least a couple of weeks ahead of time. You're welcome.

Without further ado, here is the Android Police Holiday Gift Guide for two-thousand fourteen.

Flow Home tries to re-imagine the Android homescreen

flow_home_2_screen

Android developer Larva Labs is taking a stab at re-inventing the homescreen on Android devices with an interface called Flow Home. The idea behind Flow Home is to get rid of all the small icons and tapping and swiping users engage in when using an Android device. Instead, the Flow Home interface pulls information out of the apps and shows it right on the homescreen.

The primary view with Flow Home appears to be a grid of widgets that users scroll through vertically. When a user sees something they need to access more in-depth, they can tap on the tile to drill down. Outside of that, for direct access to apps that may not be displayed via a tile on the homescreen, Flow Home provides a button in the lower right corner that users can tap with their thumb. This brings up a pie inspired fan of applications.

The team behind Flow Home 2.0 is currently signing folks up to use the beta version of the launcher. If you want to get in on the action and give Flow Home a try, hit the source link below.

Latest leak indicates more HTC Hima line devices to launch next year

htc_hima_devices_leak

After alleged specs for HTC’s next flagship smartphone surfaced a few days ago, including the codename Hima for the project, Twitter tipster @upleaks is back with information on several other devices HTC is working on. The devices include several variants in the Hima line of smartphones along with a new generation Butterfly smartphone for the Japanese market and a new HTC branded tablet.

The Hima devices include a listing for an Hima Ultra and an Hima Ace smartphone. The Hima Ultra is suspected of being an up-sized version of the “base” Hima smartphone. It appears the device is intended to make it to at least AT&T and Verizon in the U.S. market along with other markets around the globe. It would not be surprising to see it available on all major carriers.

The HTC Buttterfly 3 should be the next generation of HTC’s Butterfly line of devices. These have been Japan market only smartphones thus far and we would not expect that to change this time around. For now at least, it looks like the Butterfly 3 is headed for KDDI in Japan. The Butterfly devices historically have mirrored HTC’s flagship devices available in the rest of the world, sometimes besting them in terms of hardware.

Finally, HTC appears to be planning to bring their own branded tablet to market in 2015. Indications are the tablet will be based on the Nexus 9 that HTC is producing for Google. While some minor hardware upgrades may be in the cards, the biggest change is suspected to be the inclusion of HTC’s Sense UI on top of the Android Lollipop operating system.
