Google Now Is Showing Early Voting Information Cards For The Upcoming US Elections

The midterm elections are fast approaching in the United States, and you know what that means: horrible commercials interrupting all of your football games. But it also means that citizens should sincerely evaluate candidates for local and national posts and make informed decisions while performing their civic duty. And if you'd like to do that without taking a few hours off of work in November, you can register to vote early in most states.

Did the Nexus 6 already visit the FCC?

A new posting on reddit linked to an FCC filing that many people think is the new Nexus 6. Opinions are not unanimous though as there appear to be some discrepancies between the information in the FCC filing and information that Motorola and Google have published about the Nexus 6.

In favor of the device being the Nexus 6 are the dimensions shown in an antenna diagram that are very close to what has been advertised. The FCC filing lists the device as 83 x 159.4 mm in size while the Nexus 6 product page lists the Nexus 6 as 82.98 x 159.26 mm.

On the other hand, there are quite a few differences in wireless bands listed on the FCC report compared to the published bands that Google is advertising. Google lists LTE bands 3 and 29, while neither of these show in the FCC filing. However, LTE band 3 is not used in the U.S. and band 29 is a downlink only band that the FCC may not be concerned with. The FCC filing also fails to list GSM bands 900 and 1800 that Googles lists the device as having, nor do WCDMA bands 1 and 8. Finally, Google and Motorola indicate the Nexus 6 has Bluetooth 4.1 while the FCC listing indicates the device has Bluetooth 4.0.

Whatever the device is in the FCC reports, it has been approved and should be showing up soon. The Nexus 6 is scheduled to go on pre-order in the U.S. starting on October 29th, so the timing does seem to be consistent.

On a slightly related note, UK tech writer Paul O’Brien tweeted earlier this week that U.K. buyers interested in the Nexus 6 will have to wait until at least December to get the device.

Fancred – Indie app of the day

What is Fancred?

Fancred is a social network that is oriented toward sports fans. Along with that comes a host of features intended to help people enjoy sports more and find like-minded fans. It’s free to use in the Google Play Store.

Here’s how the app works. You sign up for an account like any other social network. From there you pretty much participate as though you were in any other social network except instead of posting pictures of food or selfies from the bathroom mirror, you post about sports things. The app contains 2700+ sports teams tags which covers a myriad of teams in a number of countries.

You can post images, check in at stadiums and other sporting events, post updates, and pretty much everything you can do in a normal social media setting. The major difference being that people here actually want to hear about that trade you made in your fantasy league. Fancred also employs a ranking system (1-100) that shows other people how much you engage in the app and with other people. It seems to work well enough.

It's like ESPN merged with Facebook.

PROS

• Social network aimed solely at sports fans.


• You can tag posts with one of 2700 sports teams tags. That also means there is support for most professional sports and in many countries.


• Other content like the ranking system, check ins at sporting events, etc are all nice touches.


• Material Design inspired UI looks good and is easy to navigate.

CONS

• If you don't like sports, reading this post was a giant waste of your time. Sorry.


• Has the occasional bug here and there.


• The user base is currently small. If you get into this, you'll need to get your friends in on it too.

Overall, this is a great app for sports fans. Like any other new social media site, it’ll get more fun when there are more people involved but you can probably find some people to join up and enjoy the app with until then. It’s a solid app despite its flaws and it’s free.

Google’s Nest purchases Revolv, to further “Works with Nest” projects

In the quest to provide you with the best home automation tools around, the recently Google purchased Nest has made a move of its own, announcing the purchase of Revolv. Revolv is another home automation company that has exclaimed Nest to be an inspiration, and that they are thrilled to be new members of the Nest family.

This purchase is what many have dubbed an ‘acqui-hire,’ meaning that Revolv was acquired primarily as a means to bring the talent over to Nest. Revolv also brings a great developer platform that has been using open source technology to connect devices throughout the home.

The combination of employees and established technology lends perfectly to Nest’s ‘Works with Nest’ initiative. Even if you haven’t heard this term, you’ve probably heard that you’ll be able to use Google Now, IFTTT, Jawbone and more to connect and control your Nest powered devices, these all fall into the Works with Nest project.

The Revolv team received high praise from Nest, stating that home wireless communications at this level exist in few others outside of the Revolv team. Of course, the idea of an excellent competing home automation hub is never good for business.

Current Revolv owners can rest assured that Nest will honor the existing warranty and support for the Revolv hardware. However, sales of new Revolv hardware have been immediately halted, this purchase and talent move is as good as done, at least from a consumer perspective.

Sundar Pichai gets a promotion, finds himself the new head of Google’s core products

There’s no question Google has their hands in just about everything these days. That’s nothing new. Because of a vast and ever growing product portfolio, Google has typically seen itself run by a large group of execs, with CEO Larry Paige overseeing things, of course. But it looks like that could soon change.

After the departure of high profile execs like Andy Rubin and Vic Gundotra, Larry Paige is now reportedly handing the reins of their entire product line to none other than Sundar Pichai. This is yet another promotion for Pichai who joined up with Google back in 2004, only to quickly rise in the ranks and move from Chrome lead, to head of Google’s Android division.

Although it’s a major milestone for both Pichai and Google, Sundar’s title wont change — at least not at first — despite having execs from products like Maps, Search, social, and more now reporting to him instead of Page. There is one exception, however, with YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki keeping the video unit separate from Pichai’s management for the most part.

Google is continually evolving and the newest change in management is a clear sign that they’re looking to keep the innovation flowing. We wish Pichai the best of luck in his new (still hush-hush) role.

Google reassigns Sundar Pichai to oversee all of its products

Sundar Pichai is no longer the face of Android, Chrome, and Google Apps. He is now the face of every Google product there is. The company has reorganized its staff and CEO Larry Page gave Pichai expanded leadership over just about everything offered by Google. According to a staff memo released internally on Friday, executives will begin reporting to Pichai rather than Page.

The reassignment of Pichai to oversee all of Google’s products is to push innovation. Having someone new at the helm of everything can inject new life into the company. Pichai is not just some random pick, though. He has been a part of the merging of Android and Chrome, bringing together mobile and web experiences.

One product that Page will not hand over to Pichai is YouTube. The video streaming service will continue to run on its own and CEO Susan Wojcicki, a longtime Google employee, will report back to Google when necessary.

Even though Page is handing over some power, he is not going anywhere. The co-founder of Google will according to Re/code, “continue to directly manage business and operations, including access and energy (a new unit run by Craig Barratt), Nest, Calico, Google X, corporate development, legal, finance and business (including ad sales).” Page will also continue to monitor the grand scheme of things for Google.

For now, Sundar Pichai’s role on paper will not change; however, that is expected considering the new wave of responsibility he is taking.
