Floatify Gets Updated, Adds Even More Floating Android L Style And Functionality

Right now there are tons of cool new ways to interact with the notifications on your Android device, with widgets like Dashclock or apps like Peek from the Paranoid Android Team, or even the new Android L preview and its floating notifications that will be coming to the Android OS once the software version is launched. You won’t have to wait till then to get the same type of functionality however, as a recognized developer over at XDA has come up with an app that was inspired by the floating notifications found in the preview that Google demoed last month at I/O.

Floatify wasn’t just released today but it did get a nice little update this afternoon that improves the user experience with the app, and it adds in some useful new features that make it even more functional than before. XDA Senior member Jawomo understood that there would be a decent number of people that would be just as in love with the floating notifications found in Android L as he was, but they wouldn’t have any way to access the feature due to not having an Android L preview compatible device. That’s where Floatify came in, allowing users to have that function and style of floating notifications without being on Android L. If you have already been using Floatify since its actual launch, then you probably already know the awesomeness that it has bestowed upon your phone.

There are tons of new features in this latest update though like direct reply actions to messages and returning missed calls, and should you be in any sort of a rush and need to reply to something as quickly as possible, you’ll find the new feature to reply from the lockscreen without having to unlock your device and open up the app very useful and time saving. Probably one of my personal favorites in the list of new features, is the gesture actions, which basically lets the user assign a Floatify notification action to specific gestures to complete that action. Gestures are also available via the status bar now, so no matter where you interact with your notifications whether it be the lockscreen, the homescreen or the status bar, doing so should be easy and stylish. Floatify supports blacklisting so you can choose which apps notify you, although whitelisting more than 10 apps will require you to pick up the paid version of Floatify.

Chrome for Android updated with improved text rendering for non-mobile sites

The latest version of Chrome for Android may not have the longest or most exciting changelog, but it will certainly make for a better user experience. With the latest update comes better text rendering for websites that do not have a mobile version, something that has been an issue for quite some time now.

The update also includes unspecified performance increases, bug fixes, and security enhancements. These improvements, in theory, should make for a much better experience when combined with the better text rendering.

Additionally, new tab pages on your Android device will now show Google’s doodles, something that existed before but mysteriously went missing.

While this update is certainly welcome, there appears to be no noticeable difference in terms of text rendering. Perhaps it will only be apparent on web pages that are abnormally bad on mobile.

[New Game] Magic (The Gathering) 2015 Brings An Updated Roster And Online Multiplayer To The CCG Standard

The perennial trading card game from Wizards of the Coast made its Android debut last year, and it seems that the developers intend to give it regular updates, just like the PC version. Magic 2015 includes an expanded collection of cards that match the physical card game, though you'll have to shell out quite a lot of cash for the full set - not unlike the real-world counterpart. Magic 2015 is a free download, but you'll need at least 1.2GB of free space to hold it.

PayPal update brings support for loyalty cards, speedier login, removes check scanning

Hot on the heels of Google Wallet’s latest update, PayPal is here with an update to their own mobile payments app. According to their changelog posted on Google Play, the update adds even more convenient features to help make sending/receiving mobile payments on the phone easier than ever.

First off, a new quicker login has been added, allowing users to quickly jump inside the app by saving the phone number associated with the login. This means users will now only have to enter in their PIN to quickly access their account information.

They’re also adding support for loyalty cards, allowing users to add retailers like Albertsons, AAA, Bloomingdale’s and more. This should help slim up that George Costanza wallet you got in your back pocket.

But it’s not all additions, PayPal actually mentions they’ve completely stripped away the ability to scan checks from the app, although specific reasons weren’t given. You can find the update available right now on Google Play via the link below.

Amazon Prime Instant Video app for Android is “imminent”

Android is known for its amazingly wide selection of apps and services, but there is no doubt some developers are simply not willing to take the bait. Such has been the case with the Amazon Instant Video app for Prime subscribers, an application that has found many forks in the road to the Google Play Store yet.

The demand exists, and many of you have been begging for this app. Rejoice, as your prayers may have just been answered. New reports have emerged, bearing rumors of Amazon planing to launch the Prime Instant Video app for Android. In what is claimed to be Amazon’s words, the launch is “imminent”. No release windows have been rumored, leaked or announced. Also unclear is whether the app would be optimized for both smartphones and tablets or not, but the app is coming.

This is a bit of a curious situation, as Amazon’s very own Kindle Fire devices do feature the Instant Video app in all its glory. It’s important to note Kindle Fire devices are, after all, Android tablets. They may be completely different and heavily modified, but the Android-bearing gadgets are still part of our distant family.

Amazon seems to be worried that releasing the official Android app would help Kindle Fire sales plummet, as there wouldn’t be much of an incentive to grab an Amazon device over any other Android tablet. After all, the app has been available for iOS, game consoles and smart TVs for a long time, as well. Android was literally being left outside of the equation.

Amazon must realize this could also bring more users to their streaming service. After all, do many of us really choose our tablets and smartphones based on Amazon Instant Video compatibility? We are sure they may lose a few Kindle Fire sales, but they may also gain a healthy amount of new Prime subscribers.

Once again, this is a rumor. We must keep this in mind, so don’t hold your breath on this information. At least until we get an official announcement or more proof.

Russian Wireless Retailer Lists LG’s G3 S Up For Pre-Sale With Specs List And Renders

It seems that LG is set to release a few different variants of the LG G3 this year with one of those being the LG G3 S. The G3 S appears to be a lower end model of the G3 or rather the mini version of it, with some different tweaks and features that have been left out when compared against the original LG G3 model that was recently released. According to this new leak there is a list of specs giving up some details on the device so we know what to expect out of it when LG launches the phone, as well as a rather nice looking press render of the the device design, which quite honestly looks no different from the regular LG G3 we already know.

The screen is a bit smaller at 5-inches, and it only comes with a screen resolution of 720P as opposed to the 2K screen we’re used to seeing on the G3 S’s bigger brother. The phone also apparently houses a quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, and will be packed with 1GB of RAM instead. The G3 S is also running lower quality cameras with an 8MP camera on the rear and a 1.3MP camera on the front face although it will still carry the laser auto focus seen in the original G3, and powering everything inside is a 2,540 mAh battery to keep the device going.

Internal storage space is also set at a lower value, only housing 8GB of memory for users although a microSD card slot is built in so you can expand upon it if you wish, and we imagine many people might want to as 8GB in a phone is not that much these days and can fill up pretty quickly. In case you were wondering, the LG G3 S is going to be running on Android 4.4 Kit Kat right out of the box so it’ll be up to date for a little while, at least until L releases a short time later this year. Since the model that is posted up here is a model listed for the Russian market, users shouldn’t be alarmed that it only supports up to 3G networks, as a model bound for other regions could possibly support LTE like the original LG G3. If you live here in the states and you’re more keen on the regular G3, most major retailers already have them in stock as does Amazon’s website.

Amazon said to be testing “Kindle Unlimited” ebook subscription

Multimedia and flashy devices sell, and this is why Amazon was right to jump into that market. This doesn’t mean the popular online retailer is ignoring what could be the only market they have a true foothold on – ebooks. Amazon is said to be testing a subscription service named “Kindle Unlimited”, a project that would offer a reading buffet to avid readers.

Signs of Kindle Unlimited’s existence showed up this morning, when some advertising for the new service showed up at Amazon’s website. The ads were discovered by Kindle Boards users, but it didn’t take long for these to disappear. In fact, there is still proof if you access Google’s cached version. Regardless, we managed to get a few details before it all went down.

Subscribers would have access to over 600,000 ebooks for the price of $9.99. The ebook titan is advertising the availability of some of the most popular books around. We can expect this subscription service to include the Harry Potter series, as well as Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings and more.

It’s obvious Amazon is aiming to compete with Sribd and Oyster, which offer similar services. Of course, Amazon is the giant here, so we can imagine there won’t be much of a fight. Not to mention, we have what seems to be proof of Kindle Unlimited also supporting audiobooks. One of the test pages mentioned there were 7,351 “Whispersync for Voice” titles.

These constant discoveries prove Amazon may be getting ready for an announcement, so let’s stay tuned for more details to come… hopefully soon. These continue to be leaks and rumors, so we won’t ask you to hold your breath. Do remember these come from Amazon’s official site, though, giving it much more credibility.
