T-Mobile will give you an iPhone 5s to Test Drive their network free for 7 days

John Legere

During T-Mobile’s Uncarrier 5.0 event in Seattle, the Uncarrier hatched their latest scheme to get more people to switch to Magenta: free phones. Well, a free iPhone 5s to be exact. T-Mobile’s Test Drive program will allow customers to try out T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network in their area on an iPhone 5s for a full 7 days — commitment-free.

Now, everyone who takes part in the offer will have a $750 hold on their credit card during the trial (so they don’t make off with the phone), and will be charged a reasonable $100 should the phone get damaged during the trial period. Pretty nuts. The new Test Drive promotion goes live on June 23rd and you can sign up by going here .

Jawbone Mini Jambox now offers add-ons for custom engraving, water resistance, and cases

Jawbone Mini Jambox addons

After upgrading the Mini Jambox’s software to enable multi-play (the ability to sync up multiple Jambox’s for added oomph), Jawbone is here introducing a few new offers. First up, the Mini Jambox is being discounted to $130 from the Jawbone online store. While that’s a little pricier than you’ll find from online retailers like Amazon who offer the Mini for about $110, Jawbone is offering a few exclusive add-on options.

Mini Jambox add-ons

First up, you can now get the Mini engraved completely free of charge. This would not only add a personal touch should you purchase one as a gift, but even if you keep one for yourself, having your name/phone number branded on the device could help ensure the accessory returns to you should you ever lose it. Jawbone is also offering a new Liquipel option for $50. This will give the Mini some added water resistance, albeit at a slightly higher cost. Lastly, they’re also offering new cotton woven carrying cases for $30 should you want to further protect your investment while traveling.

Jawbone offers free shipping on the Mini and a full 60-day money back guarantee. For those interested, you can find the Mini Jambox in all 9 color options via the link below.

Motorola Selects 10 Finalists In Design Face-Off Contest, Vote Your Favorite By June 24th

Moto 360_6

Motorola has been holding a contest for those who have been interested in designing faces for the Moto 360. The Moto 360 Design Face-Off contest isn’t over yet but Motorola has reached a verdict on deciding who would be moving forward as finalists, and they have chosen the top 10 finalists that they feel were the best submissions. In total there were 1,300 submissions to this contest so Motorola narrowed it down to just the top 10 which was quite a task. That’s a lot of submissions to weed out but even more so it just means that whoever was selected for the top 10 did a very good job at designing the Moto 360 watch face.

Motorola has narrowed the submission pool down to the 10 finalists but now their work is done, and they’re looking to the community to help in deciding who should win. They’re holding a vote for the best pick, and those who are interested in helping make the decision can make their voice heard on which one they prefer by simply opening the gallery for the top 10 finalists picks, and throwing a +1 to the one you like the most. Motorola points out however that you can vote on as many of the submissions as you like, although you can’t personally +1 a submission more than once of course.

If you happen to like more than a few though you can throw +1′s in all of their directions, essentially voting for all of the ones you find appealing. There are some pretty good ones in the top 10 list and some of them already have a clear lead over the others, but voting goes until June 24th so it’s possible that the tides could still turn for any of them. Of course it goes without saying that by the end of the contest when the voting is closed, Motorola will pick the winner by selecting the submission that has the most +1′s out of all of the 10 finalists. Seems like a fair way to do it. We have posted all of them in the gallery below and the link to the Motorola post where you can cast your votes is below as well. Make sure to get your votes in over the next 6 days!

Twitter adds ability to upload GIFs

twitter_app_icon

Today Twitter gave users the ability to upload GIFs using the same process used to upload pictures. The file size cap is 5MB, just like images, and GIFs show up simply as an image with a play button.

The addition of the play button means that users don’t have to worry about loading and playing of GIFs while they’re trying to scroll. This update has been awaited by many users.

Hangouts Gets Updated To Version 2.1.311, Seems To Be Just Minor Bug Fixes

AH Google Hangouts Logo 1.0

The big news today may be everything surrounding the Amazon Fire Phone that was just unveiled this morning in Seattle, but there’s another thing to look forward to every week on Wednesday and that’s the usual updates of Google’s apps. Today we’re seeing an update to the Hangouts app on Android, bringing forward Google Hangouts to version 2.1.311. So far it doesn’t seem that there are any major updates to the app in any way. There’s no new major feature changes and still no Google Voice integration although that should hopefully be coming soon.

Most likely all that comes with this update is just some bug fixes and improvements, and from what I can personally tell everything still looks the same. The contacts are accessed by swiping in from the right which brings in the contact overlay panel, and it can be swiped back to be hidden which reveals your conversations threads. The dropdown menu to easily switch between accounts is still there and hasn’t changed positions. As Android Spin points out there was minor changed that they noticed, which was the color of a particular emoji that seems to have had its color swapped out from orange to white. That is hardly function or user experience impacting, unless you really have a thing for orange colored everything and hated to see it go.

As with all updates you can find them in your “my apps” list inside of the Play Store if you have automatic updates turned off, which is where you’ll need to go to to initiate the update manually. If you have automatic updates turned on you likely already have Hangouts updated as it would have done so on its own without you knowing unless you were watching the screen when it happened to start. It is unfortunate that we aren’t seeing any fun, new features come with this update to Hangouts, but there’s always the possibility that we could see something out of next Wednesday or the Wednesday after. Google I/O is just around the corner so perhaps after the conference is over we’ll see some cool new things come to the app.

CA7CH Lightbox: the next wearable camera to compete against the GoPro

CA7CH Lightbox clipped

We have seen wearable cameras come and go, but so far the GoPro has kept its position as the king of the hill. With pristine image quality, unparalleled portability, solid build and insane popularity, it’s hard to beat GoPro. Is there room in the industry for competitors? CA7CH is counting on it, and they have launched Lightbox on Kickstarter.

What makes the CA7CH Lightbox unique is mostly its form factor. This camera is very portable, featuring 1.5-inch sides and 0.49 inches of depth. It’s tiny! And it is supported by a magnetic clip that makes it amazingly easy to manage. In terms of design and form factor, the CA7CH Lightbox should be a pleasure to work with.

The design may not be very important to most users, though. What we really care about is camera quality, and it seems the CA7CH Lightbox is quite capable. Its 8 MP camera sports f2.4 aperture on a 6-element lens. It supports 1080p video at 30 fps, or you can opt for 60 fps under a 720p resolution.

If real (they seem to be) the video samples show what looks like a very clear image. The camera needs further testing before we can reach a conclusion, but I have tried other wearable cameras and this one seems to be miles ahead most of them.

CA7CH Lightbox app

The CA7CH Lightbox does work with your smartphone, connecting to it via bluetooth and/or WiFi. You can transfer videos, use your phone as a viewfinder, share your content, edit your video and more. You can even make a live feed with multiple cameras.

One huge downside is battery life, which is estimated at 45 minutes of 1080p recording or 20-25 minutes of live streaming. This is a bit disappointing when compared to GoPro’s approximate 2.5 hours of continuous recording.

CA7CH Lightbox specs and features

Will this camera make it in the real world? It sure made it in Kickstarter, where CA7CH reached its goal of $80,000 in a mere 26 hours. We must say that is outstanding, and this number should get pretty high with 30 days left in the Kickstarter campaign.

I really like the concept and hope it is well-implemented, but we know how Kickstarter is most times. The options for backing the CA7CH Lightbox are listed right below, along with their prizes. None of these have reached their limit, so go ahead and sign up for whichever you prefer.

CA7CH Lightbox options

Who is backing this one? The Android app is promised to launch in “under 60 days”, which is pretty close to their Oct/Nov release.

Widely regarded as one of the best terminal clients on Android, JuiceSSH's v1.5 update today doesn't add any new features, it actually does one better: it allows other developers to add new features to the app, via community plugin support.

Plugins in Juice will be able to request custom Android permissions for listing or modifying connections, groups, and group memberships, initiating and interacting with SSH sessions, and to audit plugin interactions.
