Facer Now Free to Download, Includes Garfield and Other Brand Watch Faces

Facer, the app that lets you browse a ton of different watch faces for Android Wear devices, received a massive update this week on Google Play. Facer 2.0 features many brand partner watch faces, including a few from Garfield, American Dad, and Ghostbusters. Not only are new watch faces available, but the app is completely free to download, dropping its original $0.99 price.

If folks can’t find a watch face they are looking for, even though there are thousands, Facer allows you to create you your very own through a new website located here. Through the site, users can create custom watch faces for any number of watches, then publish them for usage. The site has many walkthroughs and tutorials to help you get started, as well as designs to inspire you.

Here are the Release Notes for Moto 360 1st Gen, 2nd Gen, and Sport Marshmallow Updates

Last week, Google announced that a major update was coming to all Android Wear watches over the next few weeks. The update is Marshmallow, even though Google doesn’t seem to want to refer to it as such. Inside, Google told us to expect speaker support, additional voice controls over messaging apps, and a bunch of new gestures. Unfortunately for Moto 360 users, the speaker support won’t be included because none of the 360 variants have external speakers. However, the updates are big and we have release notes for all 360 models below. Yes, even the original Moto 360 (1st gen) is getting the update very soon.

The update for all Moto 360 models, according to Motorola, will include support for new languages (Mandarin, Cantonese, Indonesian, Polish, Dutch, and Thai), Android 6.0’s Doze mode, screen dimming, control of app permissions, those previously mentioned new gestures, manual date and time setting, Bluetooth headset audio improvements, and other bug fixes.

With the Moto 360 (2nd gen), in addition to all of that fun, users will see Moto Body Running, which gives you the opportunity to track a run indoors, like on a treadmill. The 2nd gen 360 also should see performance improvements, like a fix for the “30 fps display issue that occurred when the watch exited the always-on screen mode.”

Here are a couple of the new features in Motorola’s own words that you should take note of:

Doze mode: Doze mode is a new smart feature that helps to preserve your watch’s battery life: it recognizes when your Moto 360 is idle and automatically goes into a deep sleep state. How does it work? When your watch is not charging and not in use, Doze mode shuts down unnecessary background processes to optimize power.

App permissions: Now you have more control over what you share with your apps. With the new permissions model, you can modify the permissions granted to apps at any time from the settings menu. To modify permissions for an app:

1) Swipe left on the watch face, then scroll down and tap Settings> Permissions.
2) Select the app you want to adjust, you will see the list of permissions for that app.
3) Tap a permission to disable/enable it.

New wrist gestures:

  • See more details or take action on a card: hold your arm in front of you and push down quickly, then bring your arm back slowly.
  • Go back on a card: hold your arm in front of you and quickly pivot up, then bring it back slowly to the original position.
  • Open the apps menu: on the watch face, hold your arm in front of you and push down quickly, then bring it back slowly to the original position.
  • Pull down settings: on the watch face, slowly turn wrist away from you then flick back towards you.
  • Exit to watch face: hold your arm in front of you and shake your wrist quickly.

First Batch of YouTube Red Originals Now Available for Viewing

YouTube launched its first batch of YouTube Red Originals this morning, a set of movies and shows that can only be viewed if you are subscribed to YouTube Red. Taking a few of its most popular creators, YouTube set out to take on the likes of Netflix and Amazon, offering original content that can only be viewed in one place. However, with the first batch of shows and movies, don’t expect to see anything on par with House of Cards or Orange is the New Black.

Available right now are two shows and two movies. The shows are A Trip to Unicorn Island, and Scare PewDiePie, starring none other than PewDiePie. The premise for this show, which should somehow be a warcrime, is as follows.

In this reality-adventure series from the creator and executive producers of “The Walking Dead” at Skybound Entertainment and Maker Studios, experience thrills, chills and laughter as PewDiePie encounters terrifying situations inspired by his favorite video games.

God help us.

The two movies are Dance Camp from AwesomenessTV, and Lazer Team from Rooster Teeth. After watching five minutes of Lazer Team, I wanted to claw my eyes out. This might be a good indicator of what to expect from YouTube in the future. As for the premise, I can give it to you simply. Four small-town losers, one of which had to wear a helmet in school, become champions of Earth thanks to a special suit of power armor made by the US Army. Such original. Much wow.

YouTube states that this first batch is only the beginning of much more original content to come in 2016.

You can check out all of the YouTube Red Original content by following the link below.

Twitter Intros “Best Tweets First” Feature, Brings Top Tweets to Forefront

A new feature is hitting Twitter, one which brings important tweets you may have missed directly to the top of your timeline. If you are a Twitter user that follows hundreds or even thousands of people, you probably miss a whole ton of interesting tweets. With the “Show me the best Tweets first” feature turned on, Twitter will automatically populate the top of your timeline with the best tweets from the folks you follow.

This feature, once available on your device, will be found in your settings menu, and will need to be turned on by the user. Once enabled, when you open up the Twitter application, top tweets will be shown in the regular reverse chronological order, just as all other tweets are.

Twitter claims that when this feature is in use, it ups the amount of retweets and tweets people send out. This is good to create conversation and interaction between users, according to Twitter.

Twitter states that the feature will go live for all users over the next few weeks.

Here is the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge in Silver. It’s Hot.

After seeing leaked in-hand images of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge in black, I think it’s safe to say that most of you thought it looked a bit cheap and weren’t all that impressed. I’d tend to agree, that those first images didn’t do the phone any justice. I would imagine that it will look much more premium in person, rather than through a semi-blurry cam quick shot, though you just never know. What I do know is that the S7 Edge in silver might change all of our minds.

Take a look at this press image that @evleaks shared last night. I know, I know, this is just a press image and a real unit could look much different. However, if you saw the Galaxy Note 5 in silver, you are probably drooling at the idea of owning this phone in this color. Well, assuming Samsung actually releases it, since they didn’t necessarily do that with the Note 5 that was on display during its announcement. To get a feel for this color on a Samsung phone, I highly suggest that you watch Tim’s Note 5 hands-on – it’s all silver, all the time.

What else does this image tell us? Not much. We once again get a look at the curved edge, but also the slight curve to the top and bottom of the phone. Since we are also expecting the back to curve at all sides, it’s looking more and more like this S7 Edge will be quite bubbly. I don’t yet know how I feel about a bubbly phone, but it could be a pleasure to hold if anything. Just please, don’t let it wobble while sitting on a desk. No wobbles, Samsung.

Thoughts?

LG G5 Will Have an Always-On Display

Been wondering what LG would do to make the G5 standout? Outside of the phone’s dual cameras and premium build, it looks they are also planning to give it an always-on display. Through a GIF posted to the company’s Facebook page this evening, we get to see a glimpse of the always-on action.

The GIF below mentions the fact that the G5 will “Never go asleep while others do,” and that the G5 is “Always ON.”

LG G5 display

You may recall that the LG V10 had a similar feature thanks to its secondary ticker display. In fact, I raved about it in my review. This, though, appears to be an area smack in the middle of the main display rather than a ticker. Does that mean AMOLED? Does that mean another trick? I don’t know but I’m excited.

Always-on or Moto Display style features are some of my favorite in the history of Android phones. With LG able to accomplish this, they are adding simple functionality that really is also really powerful.
