You can grab the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini for as cheap as $360 from Amazon today

SM-G800H_GS5 mini_Black_11

Amazon is holding a quick sale on the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini today. $360 (a little more or less depending on which color you get) will get you a small, yet capable version of Samsung’s 2015 flagship. It doesn’t pack quite the same punch as the Samsung Galaxy S5, but for half the cost there shouldn’t be many complaints.

Specs for the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini include a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, an 8 megapixel rear camera, a 2.1 megapixel front camera, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and more. It can be used on a wide variety of 2G, 3G and 4G networks to boot:

2G: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900, 3G: 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100, 4G: LTE 800 / 850 / 900 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600

Not too shabby if you’re a Samsung fan who can’t justify spending more money for one of the manufacturer’s better phones. The deal likely won’t last long so be sure to order one soon if you’re interested.

Google Is Testing A Mysterious New Mobile Payment System Called "Plaso" That Sounds A Lot Like Square Wallet

DSC06862

According to The Information, Google is in the process of testing a contextually-aware mobile payment system codenamed "Plaso" around some of the company's offices in cooperation with popular businesses like Papa John's and Panera Bread. That a new Google mobile payment system is under development at all shouldn't be surprising: Wallet's abysmal adoption rate, along with competitor Softcard, have made it obvious that NFC payments aren't resonating with consumers enough to really change buying habits yet.

You can now buy the BLU Studio Energy with massive 5,000mAh battery for only $150

Blu Studio Energy 1

We got a good look at the BLU Studio Energy during this year’s CES and were more than excited at the prospect of an Android smartphone cramming a huge 5,000mAh battery into a reasonable form factor (10.4mm thick). As it turns out, the only thing more exciting than the phone’s 52 hour talk time is its price.

Starting today, you can pick up the BLU Studio Energy from Amazon for only $150 unlocked. Yes, you heard that right. This is an off-contract smartphone for less than what Motorola is offering for the Moto G. The Studio Energy is similarly spec’d too, coming equipped with a 5-inch 720p display, 8MP rear/2MP front facing cameras, 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6582 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB internal storage (with micro SD card slot up to 64GB).

Although it’s running Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, BLU says they have plans to upgrade the device to Lollipop in June. Oh, and let’s not forget about 4-day standard use battery life, with up to 45 days standby. Holy crap.

BLU Studio Energy grey

BLU Studio Energy full specifications:

  • Network: (GSM/GPRS/EDGE) 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, (4G HSPA+ 21Mbps) 850/1700/1900, 850/1900/2100

  • Display: IPS 5.0-inch 720 x 1280 HD, with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection

  • Processor: Mediatek 6582, 1.3 GHz Quad-Core with MALI-400 graphics GPU

  • OS: Android 4.4 Kit Kat (upgradeable to Lollipop in June)

  • Camera: Rear – 8.0 megapixel, autofocus with LED Flash, (1.4mm pixel size, 1/3.2 inch sensor, 2.2mm aperture), HD 1080p@30fps video

  • recording Front – 2.0 megapixel

  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi b/g/n/, GPS, Bluetooth v4.0, Hotspot, micro-USB, FM Radio, OTG Reverse Charge

  • Memory: 1GB RAM, 8GB internal memory + microSD slot expandable up to 64GB

  • Dimensions: 144.5 x 71.45 x 10.4 mm

  • Battery: Li-Ion 5000mAh

  • Available Colors: Ceramic White, Midnight Black and Luxury Gold

The only real downside is the phone only supports GSM HSPA+ networks (standard 4G on AT&T and T-Mobile) and isn’t equipped with a 4G LTE radio. Considering the phone’s target audience (regular Joe Schmo’s and not the techies), that could be just fine. Crazy part is BLU even throws in a variety of accessories like a screen protector, case, and USB OTG cable so you can use the phone to charge other devices. Pretty nuts, right?

You can find the BLU Studio Energy unlocked on Amazon right now for $150. If you’d like to see what your money will get you, take a look at our quick hands-on video from CES last month below.

Microsoft Confirms Acquisition Of Sunrise Calendar, No Word On New Apps For Now

ap_resize Last week the scuttlebutt around the strangely popular world of tech corporate acquisitions was that Microsoft had purchased Sunrise Calendar, a good-looking and well-received alternative to built-in calendar apps on Android and iOS. Today Microsoft has stated that yes indeed, they bought it, though they haven't confirmed the reported $100 million dollar price tag. The confirmation came in the form of a YouTube video that has oddly been set to private, but various news outlets including VentureBeat got a look at it before it went dark.

Microsoft Purchases Sunrise Calendar With Plans For Strengthening Their Mobile Software Presence

Sunrise Calendar

For those that are familiar with Sunrise Calendar, news that the popular third party calendar application was potentially getting picked up by the teams at Microsoft for north of $100 million is probably something you’ve heard before. News of this possible acquisition by the software giant hit the wire just late last week, and after all the speculation it would seem that any uncertainties have now been confirmed by Microsoft themselves. Microsoft doesn’t seem to have disclosed any details at this time in regards to the price they’re paying for Sunrise Calendar, however it does seem that the deal is happening.

This could mean that we’ll begin to start seeing features of Sunrise Calendar rolled into Microsoft specific apps like Outlook and others, the good news is that there shouldn’t be any interruptions in the way of compatibility for existing and future users given Microsoft’s recent efforts to have open accessibility of their services to Android users. The video in which Microsoft had confirmed the deal was posted to YouTube earlier this morning but at this point in time the video has been made private, so perhaps Microsoft wasn’t ready to share the news of the deal, which seems like the only logical explanation as to why they would upload the video publicly for all to see only to make it private and blocked not too long after.

Sunrise is highly regarded by its users and many think of it as the best calendar app for mobile, so it honestly isn’t too much of a surprise that Microsoft should want to pick them up and bolster their own mobile offerings. Sunrise Calendar is a powerful application too though, and it integrates with other apps giving it some versatility, which appears to be just what Microsoft is looking for. For now Sunrise will remaining unchanged but it is uncertain whether Microsoft will leave the application untouched or if they’ll end up re-branding it and throwing in some of their own features to make it unique. Either way the app is still usable for now so if you want to give it a shot and see what you’ve been missing now would be the time.

It is now a legal requirement for major US carriers to unlock your phones

Master_Padlock_(9131817686)

A huge agreement between the FCC and the United States’ major carriers has gone into effect starting today that requires carriers to provide unlocking services and mechanisms for any phones that meet their reasonable eligibility requirements.

The skinny is that carriers are now legally required to unlock all phones that don’t exist under an active postpaid financing period — such as those which have been bought without a contract or that have been active for the full life of a contract — at the request of the user.

Each carrier has to list their unlocking policy and give you details on what counts as an eligible device. The common theme seems to be that the phone has to be one of their own (so don’t expect AT&T to help you unlock your Verizon device), though there are a few differences from carrier to carrier.

Verizon, surprisingly enough, seems to be the least stringent on their policies. They note that all 4G LTE devices — whether they were bought prepaid or through Verizon Edge or contract-based commitments — and a majority of their 3G devices do not ship in a locked state, and for ones that do you can request an unlock or use a publicized unlock code at your own convenience.

AT&T requires your phone’s financing/commitment to be paid in full, for your account to be active for 60 day and within good standing, and for it not to be reported as lost or stolen. The device also can’t be active on an account other than your own.

Sprint’s requirements are a bit similar to AT&T’s in areas of fulfilling financing and contract commitments and refusing to unlock devices reported as lost, stolen or flagged for other suspicious activity, though they don’t require you to have been active for a certain amount of time. As an added bonus, most phones launched after February 2015 will use domestic SIM unlocking to automatically unlock your device when Sprint’s system pegs it as eligible (otherwise you just give them a quick ring and ask).

Funnily enough, T-Mobile’s requirements actually seem to be the most complicated and stringent, though it’s still relatively reasonable. The quick explanation is that it has to be a T-Mobile phone, it must not be reported as lost or stolen, the account must be in good standing, the account must have been active for 40 days, you will have to have paid for the device in full (or complete a contract commitment for those still on legacy plans) and you must not have more than 2 unlock requests for the same line in a calendar year. Phew, that was a mouthful.

You can read more about each carrier’s specific requirements for other types of situations (such as international travel, military exceptions and more information about prepaid unlocking rules) at the links above. Take it all in, and enjoy the fact that we’ve just taken one huge step toward true wireless freedom in the United States.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 begins receiving Android 5.0 Lollipop update, here’s a quick preview [VIDEO]

note 4 lollipop

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is the next Samsung flagship to start receiving its Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade. Hold your horses before you start mashing that “check for update” button, though: it’s only rolling out in Poland so as to perform a light market test ahead of more widespread rollouts.

It’s a practice often used by manufacturers to make sure they don’t send the update out to millions of people only to find out something went horribly wrong. Poland is a relatively small market so it’s a popular choice for testing.

We aren’t expecting much different from the Samsung Galaxy Note 4’s Lollipop build compared to the Samsung Galaxy S5’s. That particular build is still very much Samsung and TouchWiz as we know them, though the company does let a bit of Lollipop’s natural shine through and embraced Material Design for the device’s standard suite of apps. You can see a preview of the update in action on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in the video below.

Folks lucky enough to own the unlocked model — SM-N910C — can look for it over-the-air, and while it has yet to hit KIES we imagine that’ll be a good place to check throughout the course of the day and week. For everyone else? Let’s hope it doesn’t take long to reach the rest of the world.
