Motorola sending Soak Test invites to Verizon Moto X 2014 users; Android Lollipop in tow?

Heads up if you’re a Motorola Moto X (2014) owner on Verizon Wireless. Motorola is sending out notifications about an incoming soak test to get a forthcoming update ready for the masses. While Motorola obviously didn’t give any meaningful details on the upgrade, we’re assuming this is the big Android Lollipop rollout that Motorola began for owners of the unlocked version of the device.

In the event that it is Lollipop, you shouldn’t expect Motorola to stray from its course — it’ll be in the most pure form you can get without a Nexus device, though not without a couple of Motorola’s treats (read: apps) thrown in. The changelog for the Pure edition should mostly apply to Verizon’s variant, though there might be a few Verizon-specific changes to expect. We’ll be sure to track the upgrade down once testing begins so stay tuned for any further developments!

[Lollipop Bug] Zut Alors: Setting Android 5.0 Language To Canadian French Can Cause SystemUI Crashes

Our readers in Quebec may want to temper their excitement for any upcoming Lollipop updates. According to this lengthy thread on Google's Android issue tracker, a number of French-speaking users are seeing system-breaking bugs. When setting an Android 5.0 device's language to Canadian French, it will periodically experience a SystemUI crash, usually when plugged in to charge or sync. The problem only seems to be affecting those who select "Français (Canada)," not "Français (France)."

So far users on the Nexus 5, Nexus 7 2013, and Nexus 9 are experiencing this problem, all running release builds of Lollipop.

The longer Android 5.0 is in the wild, the more we come across annoying little bugs. It sounds like Google might have broken something in the wireless framework in 5.0 because a sizeable number of users are reporting issues with connecting to their corporate networks after the 5.0 update.

Over the course of a few dozen posts on the AOSP issue tracker, users have narrowed the problem down to Cisco APs (which are quite common in business) running WPA2 with AES encryption.

Qualcomm releases development smartphone featuring the Snapdragon 810

The Snapdragon 810 probably won’t come to consumer devices until next June, but Qualcomm has released a development smartphone featuring the said processor. Called the Mobile Developer Platform (MDP) smartphone, it gives developers early access to the processor for testing and optimizing Android applications.

The 810 is an octa-core and 64-bit, so the rest of the specs are also high end. It includes a 6.2-inch Quad HD (2560 x 1440) display, an Adreno 430 GPU, 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, microSD slot for expanded storage, 13 MP rear camera with Dual LED flash and 4K video recording, 4 MP front-facing camera, the newest Qualcomm Hexagon DSP, 3,020 mAh battery, and the “latest available Android OS,” which we presume will be Lollipop.

The MDP is going for $799 and will ship by mid-December. A lot of money, but if you consider the Nexus 6 is $649, this isn’t a bad deal considering that you will be getting a processor that probably won’t on other consumer devices for a while.

Nexus 6 teardown reveals it’s been bolted down tight

Teardown time! This morning we get a look at the innards of the Nexus 6, Google and Motorola’s flagship developer and enthusiast smartphone for 2014. The teardown reveals a chassis that’s been bolted down with an overwhelming amount of screws, though a steady hand and patience are enough to eradicate that situation.

The Nexus 6 scored a 7/10 on merits of repairability (10 being easiest to repair), with the only negative knocks being a few components hard-soldered to the motherboard and a display with a digitizer infused (making it a bit more expensive to replace a display should you crack it). Otherwise, it looks like Motorola used the same clean and tight assembly that they’ve become known for and you shouldn’t have any worries about the quality of this thing beneath the surface.
