What is Weekend Mechanic 3D?

Weekend Mechanic 3D is a reference guide that helps you learn about the internal combustion engine of a modern automobile. It features models and narrated tutorials to show and teach you how these parts all work together. It’s free in the Google Play Store with in app purchases.

Here’s how the app works. Inside is 3D rendered models of your most standard car parts that include things like the battery, ignition coil, and spark plug. You can view each part as a 3D model that you can spin and look more closely at. There is also an option to explode the model which will essentially deconstruct the part so you can see all of the individual pieces and we thought that was kind of cool.

The other part of this application includes narrated tutorials on what each piece and how it works. Currently there are only a few of these but the developers state that they are creating more. The narrations describe the part, its roll in the engine, and how the individual components of the part work together to make it work. The in app purchases will add more parts and narrations.

PROS

• Each part is 3D rendered and you can spin, zoom, and otherwise take closer looks at each part.


• Each part can also be 'exploded' which will show you the individual pieces that make up the part.


• Some parts have narration that will tell you how each part works, where it fits into the engine, and why its needed.


• We're writing this review on the premise that the developers hold true to their word and add more content.

CONS

• The in app purchases are a little expensive. Especially if each new piece becomes an in app purchase.


• It is a new app so there are likely bug fixes and small issues that haven't been reported yet.


• Along that same line of logic, it's a new app so there isn't all that much content just yet.


• The design is a tad bland.

Overall, this is a really awesome idea. It’s a little early on so there isn’t a lot of content there yet and the in app purchases are a tad expensive. However, if you’re looking for a reference guide for an engine then this is a very promising app. It’s free to download so you can check it out and be there when the developers add more stuff.

LAVA International Iris Fuel 50 Smartphone Launched With 3,000 mAh Battery

Lava International is one of the fastest growing Indian ‘phone and tablet manufacturers. Lava were founded in 2009 and are on target to become a $1 billion company by the end of next fiscal year. They manufacture a range of feature phones, smartphones and tablets, including the IRIS series running Android. They have an in-house product testing facility in China with research and development in India (they’re the only Indian smartphone manufacturer to have in-country research facilities).

We’ve word today that they’re introducing the Fuel series of devices, starting with the Iris Fuel 50, going on sale for Rs. 7,799, $125 or £80. This is a dual SIM, 3G Android handset running what looks like a stock version of 4.4.2 Kit Kat. The screen is 5.0-inch in size and unfortunately only 854 by 480 pixel in resolution. It’s powered by a 1.3 GHz quad core processor with 1 GB of RAM. Around the back you’ll find a 8 MP main camera complete with dual flash. There’s a 2 MP front facing camera for selfies. However, the handset’s champion feature is the 3,000 mAh battery, which LAVA promise will deliver a day and a half of battery life. Lava’s focus with the Fuel series and of course the new Fuel 50 is that they’re building a smartphone to deliver solid battery life without needing to carry additional battery packs.

Lava’s research points towards consumers wanting long battery life and it’s no surprise that the Fuel 50 has a few compromises towards this. It’s quite a large, heavy device, coming in at 160g, but has a relatively low resolution screen. The advantage of the lower resolution display is that it gives the hardware less work to do, so the processor and video hardware don’t have to push as many pixels around the display. It’s unclear what the processor type is under the Fuel 50 but I suspect it’s a MediaTek ARM Cortex-A7 processor, so optimized for lower power consumption but it should be responsive running the stock interface, even with 1 GB of RAM.

Hari Om Rai, Lava International’s Chairman & Managing Director, confirmed that Lava are to release more (Fuel) products at different price points. Perhaps we can expect a larger, higher resolution model with an even higher capacity battery in the coming months? We may also see a model sporting 4G LTE coverage to capitalize on India’s small but rapidly growing LTE network.

The new Moto X (2014) comes in with a 5.2-inch display, Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 13MP main camera. It ships now with Android 4.4.4 KitKat, but keep in mind that Motorola has already promised it will get Android 5.0 Lollipop as soon as it can.

Amazon admits the Fire phone’s pricing was a major mistake

Last week Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) shocked investors with a massive loss. Jeff Bezos’ company ended Q3 2014 with $544 million in the red, a bad loss even for a company that has longed delivered minimal quarterly increases in profits or even small losses.

While Amazon had some other big-ticket investments to explain the half a billion loss (including the acquisition of streaming platform Twitch), market watchers agreed that the bulk of it was owed to the Fire phone. Indeed, Amazon booked $170 million in losses related to selling the Fire phone, and admitted it’s sitting on $83 million in unsold Fire phone inventory.

Widely panned by critics, Amazon’s first smartphone launched in July to frosty consumer reception. The device has an abysmal 2.3 stars review average on Amazon’s product page, with users singling out the lack of apps, poor battery life, and bad value for money as the reasons they disliked the Fire phone. At $199 on-contract (quickly slashed to $1), Amazon’s phone simply could not compete with other devices in its price range.

Now Amazon is admitting it blew the Fire phone pricing. Talking to Fortune , the company’s SVP of devices David Limp said that abandoning Amazon’s typical strategy to sell hardware at a very low margin was a mistake:

“We didn’t get the price right. I think people come to expect a great value, and we sort of mismatched expectations. We thought we had it right. But we’re also willing to say, ‘we missed.’ And so we corrected.”

According to Limp, the price cut to $1 from September yielded “significantly better sales.” Amazon also pushed a couple of firmware update to tackle some of the problems raised by early buyers.

Limp further insisted that Amazon is committed to the Fire phone:

“We are going to keep iterating software features to get it better and better. Each release that we’re doing, we’re learning. Beyond that, I leave it out there to see what people think.”

Amazon is known for playing the long game, and it looks like the Fire is here to stay. With that said, it’s safe to say that the current generation of the device is pretty much dead. It’s likely that over the next quarters Amazon will have to write off much of the $83 million worth of Fire phones that are now sitting in its warehouses.

As for the next generation of the Fire phone, that could be a very different story, provided Amazon goes back to its roots and begins pricing its smartphones the way it prices its tablets, e-readers, and streaming devices.
