HTC Release One More REcamera Teaser Video The Day Before The Big Event

Although it was meant to be a secret, it was quickly ousted that HTC were working on a standalone camera product/accessory under the guise RE Camera/REcamera and expected to be a rival for the adventurous GoPro hardware. Shortly after the rumors emerged leaked images surfaced showing the new REcamera which looked more like a mini periscope than an actual camera. This was followed by the REcamera being listed on the FCC. In terms of what is on offer (besides looking like a periscope) the REcamera is rumored to offer a 16MP sensor and a 170-degree Super Wide Angle Lens. The device will work underwater and also offer slow motion video recording.

In spite of all the rumors and leaks, HTC have remained relatively stum on the matter with no ‘official’ announcements given. However, that is not to say they haven’t teased us because they have. Roughly two weeks ago a mysterious video suddenly popped up on HTC’s YouTube channel. The video was quite short (barely over thirty seconds) but showed how the camera is expected to perform including underwater filming and a general outdoors feel.

Now fast forward to today. Tomorrow is the actual expected launch of the REcamera, at a special HTC event dubbed ‘Double Exposure’. Which again highlights the emphasis HTC will be placing on camera abilities this year with both the REcamera and also the expected HTC Eye (selfie phone). Now as it’s the eve of the event it seems HTC are taking the opportunity to tease us one last time. However, this time it is not only a mysterious video which has popped up on YouTube, but actually a mysterious YouTube channel that has appeared. The ‘REbyHTC’ channel only contains one video which was uploaded 19 hours ago (at the time of writing). The video (titled “Catching Air”) is not much on the face of it but simply consists of a 12 second filming of a young girl playing on the swings. As the title of the video suggests the girl swings before eventually ‘catching air’ and jumping from the swing. But if you look a bit closer, what the video shows is the rather large wide angle of the camera doing the filming. The swing and catching air highlights the camera will certainly be able to record a wide range without having to be moved at all. The video ends with #InFullView which again seems to refer to the cameras wide lens and stationary wide recording abilities. So there you go. One last teaser before the big event. It seems the REcamera will record stationary as well as it seems to underwater and also on the move. You can check out the video below and as always leave a comment.

Current Owners Of Chromecast Can Also Grab Two Months Free Hulu Plus

Last week it was reported a neat Chromecast deal had popped up for new subscribers. In case you missed it (or just to remind you) the deal was only open to people who purchased Chromecast as a new customer. To reward their new custom, Google had teamed up with Hulu Plus to offer two months free streaming of the Hulu Plus service. If you have never used Hulu Plus then in short this is quite similar to Netflix or Amazon Instant Video. Hulu Plus is a subscription based service (like Netflix) and will set you back $7.99 a month. For this you can stream unlimited shows and movies and across your devices. This overall is a good deal for new customers and especially when you consider the dongle itself only costs $35 to buy. Once you factor in the two months free subsection (basically $16) then the cost of the actual device is brought down to only $19. Sweet by any measurement. This is also an even better deal when you take into account Hulu Plus only offer (as standard) a seven day free trial which is significantly less than both Netflix and Amazon’s one month trials.

As mentioned it was originally reported last week that this deal was only available to new customers (which is how it is being advertised by Google). However, it now seems that any (new or current) owners of the Chromecast can take advantage of the Hulu Plus offer. It is not sure if this is merely accidental or if Google have made the deal available to everyone intentionally but either way the advertising of the availability to current owners is non-existent. So if you do already own a Chromecast and were upset by the news that only new customers were getting the deal then it may be worth checking out your account. To see if you can get the Hulu offer then open Chromecast, hit the triple dash menu (you know the one…top right corner) and you should see a link ‘Check for Offers’. After clicking this you should be redirected to a webpage listing the currently available offers including Hulu Plus.

Like all free trials, Hulu Plus will require you to sign up and provide payment details (credit card, PayPal, food stamps etc). So it will be up to you to make sure you cancel the subscription before the two month trial ends and they start charging. But if you were thinking about it and do already own the Chromecast then it’s probably worth checking out your offers. As always let us know if you can (or cannot) get the deals mentioned. Chromebooks Updated With Android MTP and Better Touchscreen Support

Chromebooks are a great platform for those of us who don’t especially care about what trickery goes on under the skin but just want (or need) to use a computer for lightweight computing duties. When it comes to my writing, I’m absolutely in this camp and many of the staff writers and editors here at Android Headlines also own a Chromebook. They’re fast, stable, portable, cheap and work beautifully within Google’s infrastructure. Chromebooks are a well supported product from Google; models will continue to receive updates for five years since launch. That’s over three years longer than Google’s guidelines for your Android device, which means your inexpensive writers’ notebook should still be running secure firmware for a while yet. These by themselves are reasons why we occasionally cover Chromebooks and Chrome OS plus Google are working to bring the two platforms closer (but not together as Jeremiah recently reported). We already know that Android applications are going to be ported to Chrome OS and have seen some activity here already.

Chrome OS does have features for those of us who want to experiment with the platform, though. There are three channels of ChromeOS: Stable, Beta and Development. Most people use the default stable channel (and may not even know that there are other channels available). This receives updates every few weeks after they’ve been through extensive testing. The Beta and Development channels receive more frequent updates at least a month before the Stable channel receives them, so we’ve had a heads up about a couple of new features that will make working between an Android and Chrome OS devices easier. They’ve today been released to the Stable Chromebook platform, which now sits at veriosn 38.0.2125.101 and platform version 6158.49.0) for all Chrome OS devices except Chromeboxes.

The two main updates as far as our Android world goes are MTP support and enhanced touch screen accessibility and functionality. MTP support means that we can plug our Android devices and get access to files from it whereas the improvements to touch screen functionality will make it a better platform for when more Android apps reach it. I’m especially pleased to see MTP support as there are times when my WiFi is too slow or unreliable to transfer several files from my Android device to or from my Chromebook. My Chromebook doesn’t have a touchscreen so from a personal perspective I’m not so excited to see improvements in this respect, but my next Chromebook is likely to have more bells, whistles including a touchscreen.

Google updates cross-platform aspects of its Play Game Services

Google offers its Play Game Services library in three different formats. One for Android, which uses Java; one for iOS which is called from Objective-C; and a cross-platform variant, which uses C++ and can be access by both Android and iOS.

Google has just updated its Play Games Services to bring the C++ SDK to feature parity with the Play services SDK on Android and the Play Games iOS SDK.

The cross-platform library is important as it allows cross-platform app developers to maintain common code between the Android and iOS implementations of their software. Unfortunately the cross-platform library can sometimes get left behind as Google gives a greater priority to the native Android and iOS versions. One major piece of functionality that was missing from the cross-platform C++ SDK was support for Real-time Multiplayer gaming (RTMP).

The good news is that Google has just updated its Play Games Services to bring the C++ SDK to feature parity with the Play services SDK on Android and the Play Games iOS SDK. This means that game developers who have both Android and iOS versions of their games can now safely add Real-time Multiplayer support using a single C++ code base, rather than having to write one lot of code for Android and another load for iOS.

Now that Google has added multiplayer support across all of its SDKs, it has also released a new set of multiplayer stats. Developers can visit the Developer Console to see how players are using the multiplayer integration and see the overall usage trends.

At the same time Google has also updated a few other things in the Play Game Services. Specifically it has incorporated material design into the user-interface of the latest Play Games services SDKs for Android, cross-platform C++, and iOS.

Google also sees that “Quests” are a popular way to increase player engagement. Quests allow developers to add fresh content to a game without having to release an update. Accordingly Google has added some new features to quests to make them easier to implement and manage. First it has added out-of-the-box toasts for “quest accepted” and “quest completed” events. Secondly Google has removed the 24-hour lead-time requirement for publishing and allowing repeating quests with the same name. This means that developers are now free to publish quests whenever they want, with whatever name they want.
