Report: Galaxy Alpha is first in new “A series” of metallic phones

Samsung is reportedly committed to delivering more devices that incorporate metal as part of an upcoming A series of devices.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha isn’t yet in the market, but three other devices with a similar design are already in the pipeline, according to a report from SamMobile . The phones will make up Samsung’s new A series (it’s not clear if they will be called Galaxy A, Alpha, or something else) and according to SamMobile’s insider, they should be announced in Q3 2014 (by the end of September.) It’s possible that Samsung will reveal them at IFA next week, but that looks a bit unlikely.

The first three A series devices bear the SM-A300, SM-A500, and SM-A700 codenames. Of them, the SM-A500 has already been spotted in Samsung’s UAProof database. The A300 will allegedly feature a qHD (960×540) display, while the other two will come in HD, like the Galaxy Alpha.

The A series devices will feature front-facing cameras that are better than Samsung’s current offerings, according to the report.

So, what’s going on here? My educated guess is Samsung is preparing a line of design-focused devices that will appeal to customers who favor looks over specifications. The Galaxy Alpha, with its muted specs and HD screen, is a good example. Samsung clearly hopes to capture some of the customers that just want a phone that works well and looks nice, without worrying about CPUs and RAM, people who have traditionally tended to buy iPhones.

It will be interesting to see where the Note series and Galaxy S series fit in Samsung’s grand scheme. The Note 4 is rumored to come with a metallic frame, just like the Alpha. If that turns out to be true, we can’t see Samsung going back to plastic for the top of the line S series. I guess we’ll find out in just a few days.

T-Mobile gives 2GB of LTE data on Simple Starter plan for just $45 per month

Folks on T-Mobile’s affordable $40 Simple Starter plan have likely been loving the unlimited talk and text, plus 500GB of LTE data for $40 per month, but what happens when they decide they’re no longer a light user? Thankfully T-Mobile’s introduced an inexpensive avenue for greatly increasing that pool of high speed data.

The company has announced a new $5 upgrade option that will net you a full 2GB of data on their LTE network, effectively quadrupling your allowance without quadrupling your bill. Of course, going over that 2GB will get you back onto 3G, though you can at least take solace knowing you won’t be hit with expensive overages for using that pinch more of data.

T-Mobile seems to have no shortage of moves to help bring competition back to the United States wireless sector. We’ve seen the other big 3 carriers begin to roll out more affordable plans as a result of T-Mobile’s aggressive strategy, and the Uncarrier still isn’t satisfied. It’s continuous beneficial changes like these that will keep netting them millions of customer additions each quarter, and as long as they can maintain momentum and a solid network it won’t be long before they’re no longer seen as the under dog. The new plan is available for both existing and new customers starting September 3rd.

Sony accidentally leaks possible compact tablet and new smart watch

We’re not sure if Sony has some of the world’s most untrained interns or if they decided some of the best marketing they can do is to leak their own products, but yet another announcement may have been spoiled ahead of their IFA conference next week. In a “Street Smart Summer School” promotion they’re hosting on Facebook to educate folks on on the SmartBand, the company accidentally posted an image of what appears to be a small tablet, as well as a smart watch that may or may not be the rumored SmartWatch 3. The image has since been removed.

The former device has been leaked in recent weeks as the Xperia Tablet Z3 Compact, with rumors telling us to expect a small form factor that was popularized by tablets such as the Nexus 7 and the LG G Pad 8.0. Highlights of its specs are said to be a Snapdragon 801 chipset, 3GB of RAM and an 8 megapixel Exmor R camera sensor. We’re not yet sure what else to expect from the device, though we imagine it’ll come in within that typical 7-8 inch range and sport HD resolution.

On the side of the smart watch? We’re just as clueless, though we know it likely won’t be an Android Wear smart watch as Sony has said time and time again that they instead wish to focus on their own platform (which should still be based on Android at the very least). It won’t be long before we’re doused with all the goodness we’re waiting for, so circle back around August 3rd next week when all of this information is scheduled to spill out.

Sony’s 8-inch tablet and new smartwatch leak in promo image

Sony accidentally revealed the existence of the 8-inch Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact last week, and not it’s done it again – a promotional shot may give us the first look at the device.

The image above was spotted on an official Sony Facebook page, part of a promo for the Lifeband wearable. The image appears to have been removed from the page since then, not before a tipster sent it to the folks over at Xperia Blog.

The device in the picture appears to be a smaller version of the Xperia Tablet Z2, and it’s very likely that it’s the rumored Tablet Z3 Compact. The device features a typical Xperia design, with a 4:3 screen format and thinner bezels on the sides (when held in portrait mode). Judging from the poolside setting, the Z3 Compact will definitely be water resistant, just like the Tablet Z2 and all the Xperia flagships.

The other device making an appearance in this leak could be the third-gen Sony Smartwatch, which is slated for an IFA release, just like the Xperia Tablet Z3 Compact. The star of the show at IFA 2014, however, will be the Xperia Z3. Read all about it in our rumor roundup.

Second Galaxy Note 4 teaser is all about the S Pen

With a little over a week to the launch of the Note 4, Samsung is warming its marketing machine with a new video teaser highlighting the S Pen.

The first Note 4 teaser from last Friday was focused on the Note series’ handwriting features. Now Samsung is talking about the S Pen as “a truly notable invention since, well, the pen.” Under the same “Are you ready to note?” tagline, the video shows people using the S Pen as a tool for interacting with their devices and various apps.

There’s nothing new here, and nothing exciting about the teaser in itself. Samsung is known to place a major focus on new S Pen features during its Note events, and these first teasers tell us that the Note 4 will be no exception.
