Why is Sony making selfie cameras shaped like perfume bottles?

Seriously, we have no idea.

Here’s the skinny – people are obsessed with selfies in China, home of beautification modes, selfie sticks, and “groufies”. Sure, the trend is worldwide, but China (and Asia in general) is spearheading selfie-enabling technology.

Case in point, the new camera add-on that Sony is hawking in China, which looks like a tiny perfume bottle (or bottle cap). The add-on apparently connects to a compatible Sony phone through the audio jack, though we presume the devices actually communicate via Wi-Fi Direct, just like Sony’s QX10 and QX100 detachable lenses. There’s a large lens and an LED flash, and the gizmo can swivel around its axis to switch from selfie mode to normal mode.

Sony is obviously hoping to start a new craze among young Chinese women. According to Engadget , this questionable contraption has been spotted in the hands of several models and “influencers” in China, ahead of the product’s official launch this Friday.

If Sony is successful and the perfume bottle camera becomes the next big thing, we have no doubt that a sea of clones and similar devices will soon swipe over the world. And that’s, frankly, a bit scary.

Note 4 Ultrasonic cover will guide the visually impaired (but it’s not something new)

Ultrasonic cover on the Galaxy Core Advance

One of the more distinctive accessories that Samsung will offer for the upcoming Note 4 is an Ultrasonic cover that works like sonar to guide people suffering from visual impairment.

According to the folks over at SamMobile , Samsung is developing an Ultrasonic cover for the Note 4 that will alert users about the presence of obstacles in their path. Users will be able to choose from three distance settings – short, middle, and long – with the width of the detection field narrowing as the distance increase. The report also includes a product disclaimer, warning that the Ultrasonic cover is not a substitute for a walking cane or guide dog and that it shouldn’t be used as a mobility guide by itself.

The Ultrasonic cover isn’t entirely new – Samsung has actually announced the accessory back in March, for the little known mid-ranger Galaxy Core Advance.

Here’s the official description of the Ultrasonic cover from Samsung’s March press release:

The Ultrasonic Cover allows users to detect obstacles and navigate unfamiliar places by sending an alert through a vibration or TTS feedback. By holding the Cover in front of the user, it can enhance a visually impaired user’s awareness of their surroundings by sensing the presence of a person or object up to 2 meters away.

Along the Ultrasonic cover, Samsung also launched an accessory called Optical Scan Stand, which works with a compatible device to read out printed text through OCR technology. We expect Samsung to launch a similar accessory for the Note 4.

Brazilian Prosecutor Wants Incognito Social Network, Secret, Removed from App Stores

On the Internet people can choose whether or not they want to have a face. This amount of secrecy puts a lot of power into the hands of users. It is up to them whether they choose to use this power to do good or to take part in some horrible disturbing acts of violence such as cyberbullying. These acts of cowardice has unfortunately hurt many people and in some serious cases have even led to suicide. I’m sure that many of you have heard of such cases in the news.

Cyberbullying has recently brought negative attention to the wildly popular app, Secret, as well as Google and Apple since they both have the app in their respective stores. For those not familiar with the app, it allows friends to share their thoughts including guilty pleasures all while remaining anonymous. People can also anonymously reply to these posts as well. It only takes a handful of users to ruin something good for many. In this case, Secret has been used to carry out many cyberbullying and harassment cases and has caused a Brazilian prosecutor to push for the two aforementioned companies to not only remove the app from their stores but the prosecutor even asked for something far more drastic. He has reportedly asked them to remove the app from Brazilian users’ phones as well.

As shocking as it might sound, Google actually does have the ability to pull this off. They have even put it to use before in 2010. In order to remove a malicious app both from the Android Market, as it was then called, and remotely from some phones that had the app installed. Users then received a notification informing them of what has transpired. Apple’s iPhone reportedly contacts the mother ship from time to time in order to check a blacklist of apps that is stored on its servers. Once it has been confirmed that an app has been blacklisted, that app will not launch. Google’s methos seems to work best since people who Jailbreak their iPhones can bypass this security feature. The Judge has yet to make the ruling official but if the judgment does pass, the two companies would have to respond within ten days or risk paying 8,900 USD per day.

I know that you saw a nice picture of Secret running on my phone but take a look at what I found when I opened the app today. This is the kind of thing that the prosecutor is talking about though I do think he is asking for too much.
