When it showed up at a cost of $50 a couple weeks ago, Motorola's new Moto Stream Bluetooth-to-analog icosahedron-shaped stereo adapter wasn't exactly priced to like. It does have some neat features like NFC, apt-X support, a battery, class 1 Bluetooth (greatly extended range), and an A2DP profile with support for up to 5 simultaneous Bluetooth connections, so it doesn't have to constantly re-pair. But, $50 is an awful lot when there are many cheaper products with similar (and in some ways superior) functionality on the market, so it might have made buyers a bit apprehensive.

We weren’t expecting Unicode Standard 7.0 until next month, but it looks like it’s arrived early. Available starting today, the update, which introduces 2,834 new characters is bringing something far better than historic scripts or extended support for written languages across the globe (who needs all that junk, am I right?). Say hello to a whopping 250 new emoji. Because sometimes there’s nothing that quite gets your point across like flipping someone the bird in pictograph form.
Everything from various hand signals, to new smileys is being added. Just keep in mind that platforms like Android and iOS will need to be updated to support the new standard, so don’t expect to see this until later versions. Huawei isn’t that well known of a brand here in the United States, and one could argue that there are now circumstances that have caused future attempts to break into the U.S. market to come to a slow crawl. Despite this low brand presence though they are making at least some attempts to cater to U.S . consumers who are and/or might be interested in taking a look at their latest flagship device, the Ascend Mate 2. The Huawei Ascend Mate 2 first of all comes packed with a whopping 3,900mAh battery toted at 48 hours of life before the user needs to plug in the phone, and a huge 6.1-inch display that would be big enough for just about anyone, yet you can still fit it comfortably in your pocket due to its thickness,(or lack there of I guess you could say)at least that’s what Huawei wants us to believe with the images they have as webpage backdrops at the landing page for the Ascend Mate 2, where a guy casually slides it into his back pocket. Other notable specs include the 13MP rear camera, a 5MP wide angle front camera, and of course support for GSM LTE networks such as AT&T and T-Mobile for those that subscribe to their services.
The best part about all of this is the $299 price tag of course, which is the same cost of what you’ll have to fork over to buy it from Huawei themselves, but now users can order this device through Amazon Prime, and it’s shipping immediately according to the Amazon listing. You can even get it by this Wednesday June 18th(the big day of Amazon’s announcement for their own smartphone)if you order now and choose two day shipping at the checkout. To be quite honest, $299 isn’t all that bad especially when you consider what this thing has going for it. Its only drawback considering this is a brand new device is the fact that it runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean instead of Kit Kat, but that isn’t the end of the world. Voice recognition and voice enabled features in devices is becoming more prominent and a huge focal point for many of the OEMs and companies involved with electronics and mobile device manufacturing. Google has the technology it’s built behind Google Now and Google voice search, and Apple has Siri, and of course Samsung has its own version of voice recognition software built into many of its smartphones, tablets, and other devices. Siri and S voice are both powered by Nuance communications though, most notably known for Dragon dictation back in the early days of Android. Apple and Samsung aren’t the only companies that use Nuance however, their communications software is baked into plenty of different things from various companies, Nintendo and Panasonic just to name a couple big ones. Recent reports from the WSJ state that Samsung may be one of many companies looking to snag Nuance in an acquisition.
First and foremost, if this were to happen the most obvious thing to follow would be that all those companies who are currently using Nuance in the many different devices and products that they manufacture and sell, would either have to most likely start licensing the software and technology from Samsung or forego licensing and move to using something else. The question is if they chose to stop using Nuance, what would be their alternative?
Although many companies use Nuance Communications speech recognition software in their products, Samsung is by far the largest and uses it the most. You can find the voice software in many of Samsung’s different mobile devices, TV’s and even upcoming wearables. Samsung could be looking for a way to strengthen and further their own speech recognition by purchasing Nuance, but would it be far fetched to think they might be looking into the acquisition as a possible way to open up another revenue stream through licensing deals? It would certainly be a great way for them to make back some of the money they lost to Apple in recent litigation, that is of course assuming they actually buy Nuance and that Apple would continue to use Nuance to power Siri if that happened.

There’s a new Kickstarter campaign worth keeping our eyes… or ears on. Earin comes to pioneer a new generation in audio. This set of earbuds is said to offer unprecedented flexibility and a true wireless experience. Earin may very well be the true wireless headphone set we have been waiting for.
Finding the right wireless or bluetooth headset can be a challenging quest. It seems there is always something wrong with such gizmos. Firstly, none of them are truly wireless, even if they don’t connect directly to the audio source. There is always some kind of band or cable bringing the headset together. This makes using wireless devices a bit more uncomfortable than expected.
Bluetooth technology can also be a bit fraile. I have returned multiple bluetooth headsets due to weak connections and constant issues. These also tend to not be as portable as expected, sometimes offering over-the-ear form factors and annoying necklace-like contraptions.
I still haven’t found the right bluetooth headset, so I have continued to stick with wired solutions.
I am not saying Earin is here to fix all your headphone problems. After all, Kickstarters are not always what we expect, but it does look like a very promising project. We can begin by telling you Earin headphones are truly wireless. They have no cables or plastic connecting them.
These earbuds go right into your ear, offering what the manufacturer promises to be amazing sound quality in the smallest form factor possible. All components are built right into each earbud. These can be stored in a “capsule” that also works as a charger. This capsule literally looks like a keychain, making portability a huge focus.
Battery life is a very important factor. As expected the Earin headphones can’t really go against your humongous Beats Wireless in terms of battery life, but it doesn’t fare very badly, either. Those 50 mAh batteries can make the Earin earbuds last 2.5-3 hours.
Earin’s Kickstarter campaign will be around for 37 more days, but over 2000 backers have already blown away the company’s £179000 goal. The Super Early Bird special is already depleted, but you can sign up to get these earbuds for just £99, which is not a bad price for a bluetooth headset.
Backers should be getting their Earin earbuds by January 2015, which is a pretty long wait, but it could be worth it. Who is signing up?
The latest entrant into the crowdfunding field is Soap, an intelligent router. The product aims to control every wireless device in your home with its lone router. It monitors and keeps everything that is connected secure. On the Indiegogo page, it is called “all-in-one home automation platform” due to the fact that it has almost no limit to the types of wireless devices it can work with. The secure side of Soap protects you from hackers and malware (to an extent) and keeps things private by hiding the devices that are connected.
