Don’t Miss These Top Android Stories: 6/19/2015

We are wrapping up this week at DL, but before we go, we need to leave you with all of this week’s top stories. A lot happened, you know. Nest introduced the Nest Cam and Nest Protect (2nd Gen), OnePlus told us which processor their upcoming phone will run, and AT&T got fined $100 million for throttling unlimited data plan customers.

In a tad bit more exciting news, a reported Huawei UK employee confirmed the OEM’s plans for producing a Nexus smartphone this year, the Moto 360 is receiving its Android 5.1.1 update, a big ol’ hoopla was made over Samsung’s keyboard security, and we managed to sit down long enough for Episode 85 of the Droid Life Show. We’re so close to Episode 100, we can almost smell it.

Miss anything from this week? Don’t worry, we have you covered below.

Have a great weekend, folks!

Soak Test for Moto X (2nd Gen) on Verizon Starting, Probably Android 5.1

A soak test to preview “a new software release” for the Moto X (2nd gen) from Verizon is starting this weekend (maybe even this minute), according to a number of our readers. The update should be Android 5.1, which is good news for those who have had a rough go of it since receiving the update to 5.0 back in late 2014

Assuming the update does well during the test, the rest of the Verizon Moto X (2nd gen) community should be receiving it in no time. Typically, if a test is successful, the update rolls out publicly within a week or so.

Anyone receive the update? Let us know any info you can.

Cheers J, M, and K!

Deal: $209 for This Refurbished Verizon Moto X (2nd Gen)

Motorola may be failing miserably at providing Lollipop updates to its line of flagships from 2014, but that doesn’t mean their phones aren’t still worth a look at the right price. For example, you can grab the Moto X (2nd gen) on Verizon for just $209.99. That’s a crazy good deal on any phone, let alone the phone we called 2014’s best.

Now, keep in mind that the phone is manufacturer refurbished, so it’s not “brand new.” Still, $200 for this good of a phone that will certainly get Lollipop in the very near future is almost a no-brainer if you need a new, cheap phone.

This deal includes 16GB black, white (might be bamboo), or “red” (might be football leather) color choices. Free shipping is also included.

How to: Setup and Use WiFi on Android Wear

The Android 5.1.1 update for Android Wear introduced what I would consider to be the most important new feature since the platform launched. I’m talking about WiFi connectivity of course, which lets you have some freedom from your phone and the Bluetooth connection that previously tied phone to watch.

With WiFi connectivity on your watch, you could leave your phone on the other side of your house or office, lose that Bluetooth connection, yet still sync notifications to your wrist. You still get to interact with notifications, respond to messages via voice, and launch Google voice actions. This really is one of those game-changing type features because it allows your watch to be less reliant on having your phone nearby at all times.

And with that in mind, we thought we should walk through the setup process for WiFi on your smartwatch because the process isn’t as straight-forward as one would hope. There are things like Cloud Sync and “Automatic WiFi” involved, none of which you would probably think to look for without being told. Thankfully, once you have WiFi ready to go, it’s one of those things that you can set and forget, as the hand-off from Bluetooth to WiFi should happen automatically going forward.

In the video below, you will find the instructions in a step-by-step format. Let us know if you have any questions.

ASUS ZenFone 2 Bootloader Unlocked Thanks to Developers

Anyone holding off on picking up a ZenFone 2 from ASUS because it shipped with a locked bootloader now has reason to celebrate going into the weekend. As reported directly on XDA, the ZenFone 2’s bootloader has been unlocked by developers, with instructions for you to perform the method released.

The instructions for flashing look pretty simplistic. With a few adb commands and a single download, you will be unlocked and good to go in no time, although be aware that the poster does lay out a few cautions for potential flashers.

Now that the bootloader is unlocked, it opens up the doors for third party developers to get to work on additional software for users to flash. Good times ahead.

If you rock a ZenFone 2, or plan on picking one up, have at it.

OnePlus Releases Beta Fix for Touchscreen Issues on OxygenOS, Requires the Flashing of Zips

For anyone who rocks the OxygenOS custom ROM on the OnePlus One, a fix has been made available for a reported touchscreen issue, but OnePlus notes this is just a beta fix. Issues may still occur.

The process seems rather simple enough, as it involves just downloading and flashing two separate zip files. Although, you do need .Net 4.5 downloaded and you must be running this on a locally installed version of Windows 7 or Windows 8. No Mac support.

Of course, OnePlus’ lovely customers took to the comments section to deliver a few memorable statements. One forum user asks, “People actually use this ROM?” Another says, “Thanks for update, it could be a bit faster, but OnePlus is OnePlus. You guys always work well after users hatred comments.”

Ah, the Internet. Wonderful place we have here.

To download the zip files needed for this operation, follow the via link below and be sure you are running a custom recovery.

Samsung’s QuickPanel Restore App Brings Missing System Toggles Back

If your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge device fell victim to a system toggles bug that Samsung has yet to explain, there is now a fix available. According to a few users in forums and on social media, system toggles for mobile data, mobile hotspot, and private hotspot simply disappeared one day, and Samsung stated they were working on a fix.

The fix is pretty cool, though. You download the QuickPanel Restore app from Galaxy Apps, run it, it fixes the issue, then it asks you to uninstall it. Once the app has completed its job, your system toggles should have returned, and then you will have no need for it.

Even though the fix is neat, we wish Samsung would explain what happened in the first place.

To grab this app and bring back those valuable system toggles, click the following link from your Galaxy device.
