This is How Blackberry “Secures the Android Platform” With the Priv

As Blackberry mentioned today in a blog post about securing Android, they have a “long and storied” history of being able to do so on mobile devices. They lay claim to things like being the first to secure email and other applications and deploy app permissions. Because of that history, they want you to believe that by teaming up with Google for the Blackberry Priv, they will give you a more secure mobile Android platform than anyone else.

The odd thing about today’s blog post, is that they reference a previous post we hadn’t seen before that talks about how they are the ones who actually plan to make Android secure, because as of right now, “it’s not protecting your privacy.” Yikes. So Blackberry is excited to team up with Google, but it sounds like they also think Android is a sh*t platform when it comes to security. Sounds like the start of a wonderful partnership!

Either way, here are the “world-renowned” security ideas they are bringing to Android and the Priv.

  • BlackBerry’s Hardware Root of Trust, a unique manufacturing process that injects cryptographic keys into the device hardware, providing a secure foundation for the entire platform.
  • Verified Boot and Secure Bootchain, which uses the embedded keys to verify every layer of the device from hardware to OS to applications in order to make sure they haven’t been tampered with.
  • A hardened Linux kernel with numerous patches and configuration changes to improve security.
  • FIPS 140-2 compliant full disk encryption on by default to protect your privacy.
  • The BlackBerry Infrastructure, a secure distributed global network that transmits petabytes of encrypted data to and from the world’s most powerful leaders and professionals.
  • BES12, the leading Enterprise Mobility Management platform used by the world’s most powerful governments and corporations.

And look, I’m not trying to go easy on Google and the number of security issues that have been brought up lately, but man, tearing into your new partner seems like an odd first step. I guess Blackberry better really bring it!

Sorry, HTC, I’m Not Buying Your One A9 Message

HTC wants you to think they are doing “Something special, something different” with their new One A9. Sorry, I’m just not buying any of it. Call me an HTC hater (which I know many of you will), but this is just another Android phone no one will care about or remember in a couple of weeks. Well, you may remember it, just not because of what it can or can’t do. You will remember this phone because of its appearance and the non-stop cracks we will all make about its resemblance to the most popular phone on the planet.

And that’s actually a good place to start with the HTC One A9 – it’s appearance. The HTC fankids are still mad at me for this post, where I said that HTC had given up and started making iPhone clones. Of course, today has arrived and they have indeed made an iPhone 6 clone. It doesn’t look anything like previous HTC One phones, even though HTC will tell you that it does or that Apple is the one who actually copied them with the all-metal design. It’s obvious to anyone not a part of HTC Elevate or with a corporate HTC badge that this phone’s design is probably far worse of a copy than what Samsung did to land itself in lawsuits with Apple all those years ago. Look at the photo below that The Verge took.

It’s funny actually, the One A9 landing page has the quote “Design worth imitating” emblazoned on it. It’s almost like HTC admitting to Apple that they were onto something the last two years.

htc one a9 iphone clone

But enough of the design comparisons, since that’s the obvious talking point. Let’s talk about the rest.

HTC was quick to point out during today’s presentation that this phone can be bought unlocked, which is typically a good thing. We love unlocked phones. But you see, HTC isn’t doing anything new or different here that pushes this industry forward. Motorola did with the Moto X Pure. Google is doing it with the new Nexus phones. Those phones work everywhere and support dozens of LTE bands, along with both CDMA and GSM networks. HTC’s One A9, nope. HTC is selling this phone unlocked, just like they have with every single HTC One M phone, meaning this is an unlocked phone that only works on AT&T and T-Mobile. It won’t work unlocked on Verizon or Sprint. It’s basically an international model with limited connectivity, being touted as something special. So much for “supporting the carrier of your choice,” eh, J-Mac?

On another unlocked note, HTC says that you can unlock this phone’s bootloader and that doing so won’t void the phone’s warranty. That’s good news, since Motorola isn’t making the same promise with its Moto X Pure. However, is this really a tinkerer’s phone? Like, do you sell phones based off bootloader unlocking anymore? It’s a mid-range phone without universal carrier acceptance? Android “techies out there” tend to like high-end phones. They like the best of the best. They sure as hell don’t want a fake, entry level iPhone.

htc one a9 colors

At a $399 promotional price, is the One A9 even worth it or a good deal? At $399, it would be something to consider, sure. But again, HTC is very clear in noting that this price is promotional for those who pre-order. In other words, HTC thinks a phone with a 5-inch 1080p display, 2150mAh battery, 13MP camera with OIS, and Snapdragon 617 processor is worth more than $400 and plans to raise the price. They aren’t making it obvious whether or not this is the price of the 16GB model with 2GB RAM or the 32GB model with 3GB RAM, but I’m imagining it’s the latter. Jesus, it better be.

Compare this phone and its price to the OnePlus 2, Nexus 5X, and Moto X Pure. Would you buy the One A9 over any of those? They all use higher end processors, deliver closer-to-stock Android experiences, and bigger batteries. The 5X is $20 cheaper, will get Android updates faster, and also has the best Nexus camera to date. The Moto X Pure is the same price, yet has a bigger, better display, higher-resolution and higher-end Sony camera, and can be customized at no extra cost. The OnePlus 2 starts at $70 cheaper and matches or betters the A9 in specs on almost every level.

Speaking of updates, HTC is claiming that the unlocked One A9 will get “every Google software update within 15 days of Nexus devices!” I love the enthusiasm with the exclamation mark, but HTC already failed miserably with their last software update promise, and it was six times as long as this new one. Even if HTC can keep this phone up-to-date, how long will that last? Will it last for two years? Maybe until the next One phone takes its place in six months? Or will it last until they apologize for not meeting their promise and then just forget about the promise?

Finally, do we even need to talk about the One A9’s 2150mAh battery? Hopefully, Qualcomm figured out how to add highly efficient unicorn dust to the Snapdragon 617 or this phone is going to need to take advantage of Quick Charge 2.0 and 3.0 about 3x per day.

htc one a9 wine

I want to think that HTC is still trying, I really do. But after the One M9 and now this, an iPhone clone, I don’t even think I can take them serious anymore. That’s sad too, because when we talk about history and Android, HTC’s past gets brought up time and time again. The One X. The EVO. The original DROID Incredible. Even the One M7. Those phones all have a special place in not only the HTC story, but in Android’s. After seeing and hearing everything that was announced today, you have to start wondering if HTC is ever going to be included in the next chapter.

Google Maps Update Brings Gas Prices, Ability to Add Detours During Navigation

An update is rolling out to Google Maps on Google Play, bringing with it the ability to check prices of gas at stations near you, as well as the function of adding detours to your trip during navigation.

Once updated, users inside of the Maps application can search for nearby gas stations, with the price of gas and the station’s name displayed in the results. For example, you will search for gas, and a Shell, Chevron, and BP station will pop up. You can then choose which station to drive to depending on how much you would like to spend.

In addition to gas prices, during navigation, users can add custom detour stops, such as a grocery store, gas station, restaurant, or other pitstop to an ongoing trip. This means no more backing out your current navigation in order to search and find whatever you are looking for.

The update should hit all users’ devices soon through Google Play.

AT&T and Sprint Confirm HTC One A9 Plans, T-Mobile Probably Will Too

The HTC One A9 is coming to AT&T and Sprint for sure, according to announcements from each carrier. AT&T isn’t giving out much details, only that they will sell the phone both online and in stores. Sprint, on the other hand, has confirmed a November 6 launch and $20 per month lease for the phone.

I’m guessing that T-Mobile will soon announce similar plans, since they are listed on HTC’s site as an available carrier if you pre-order the phone.

Also, November 6 is the day that the $399 unlocked phone arrives as well.

HTC Commits to One A9 Updates 15 Days After Nexus Phones Get Them

How do you try and win over Android fanboys who might be hesitant to buy your newly announced, mid-range iPhone clone? You tell them to expect incredibly swift updates. And that’s what HTC did today during its One A9 announcement.

HTC is committing to sending out “every Google software update within 15 days of Nexus devices!” That’s a big deal. Because software updates have been a constant headache for Android manufacturers for years, this could be something to pay attention to. I don’t know that it makes this particular phone any more appealing, but it certainly could if HTC adopts this mindset for future, actual, flagship phones.

Can they live up to this kind of promise? For everyone’s sake, I hope so.

Hey, Here is the New DROID Turbo 2, Teased Officially by Verizon

The moment HTC got done announcing their low-end HTC One A9 phone, Verizon and Motorola decided to steal their thunder by teasing the new DROID Turbo 2 in a short video clip on Twitter. As you can see in this clip, which tells us “The new DROID is dropping soon,” we get to see the back of the phone as it falls gracefully to the ground. If you aren’t following their lead here, it’s them not only showing you that this phone will have a “shatterproof” display, but that it can withstand drops. Clever.

To watch the clip, hit up the Tweet below.

When Verizon and Motorola really make this phone (and the MAXX 2) official on October 27, we will be there.

HTC Announces the One A9

HTC just made the One A9 official, its latest “One” phone that should take us through the end of the year.

Like previous One phones, it has a metal body and comes in multiple colors. It also sports an 5-inch AMOLED display, fingerprint sensor, SD card slot, camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), and HTC’s customized Sense skin on top of Android. The phone is (as expected) the first non-Nexus to run Android 6.0 Marshmallow. (Full specs)

The phone is available globally during the first week of November. Of course, carriers and locales will announce their own plans for launching it, with pricing.

HTC is also releasing an unlocked version on HTC.com as a SIM unlocked phone, with an unlockable bootloader (warranty stays when unlocked too), that should work on any carrier will work on AT&T and T-Mobile. It will be up for pre-order today on HTC’s website and will ship November 6.

During a promotional period, the One A9 will be available starting at $399.

BE BRILLIANT WITH THE NEW HTC ONE

HTC delivers a bold new choice for people who want stunning design without compromising on style, performance or personalization: the HTC One A9

NEW YORK – October 20, 2015 – HTC today unveiled the latest addition to the award-winning HTC One family, the HTC One A9. Melding the best of HTC’s acclaimed design and innovation with the latest from Google’s Android, this is a stunning, no-compromise smartphone that stands out from the crowd. Built for people who want a better choice, the HTC One A9 is a smartphone that combines striking design on the outside with the newest features of Android 6.0 Marshmallow with HTC Sense on the inside to create an unrivaled smartphone experience.

“HTC is a smartphone pioneer, having delivered the first Android smartphone, the first Windows smartphone, the first 4G smartphone, and the first all-metal smartphone,” said Cher Wang, chairwoman and CEO, HTC. “Today we’re taking that heritage of innovation to the next level, unveiling a phone that stands apart in a market increasingly dominated by a company which controls every aspect of your phone. The HTC One A9 breaks from this trend by offering an incredible design, fantastic performance, cutting-edge software features and the freedom to take full control of your smartphone experience.“

Metalmorphics: A new standard of all-metal design excellence

An evolution of the iconic HTC One family design, the HTC One A9 draws on the natural beauty around us, by using rich, striking colors and unique finishes – an approach called “metalmorphics.” New curves, refined edges, and precision-cut ridges on the power button flawlessly combine with the super-thin metal frame giving the phone a natural and lightweight feel. The elegant dual finish, available in a Carbon Gray, Opal Silver, Topaz Gold and Deep Garnet1, is painstakingly brushed with hairline detail and bead-blasted before the sides are polished, giving additional depth and richness that is unique in the smartphone market. Finally, in a stunning fusion of metal and glass, a 5-inch, edge-to-edge, 2.5D Corning® Gorilla® Glass 4, Full HD AMOLED screen cascades into the metal frame, giving you brighter and more vivid colors for brilliant graphics and gaming, even in direct sunlight.

Unleash your inner photographer

Your best camera is the one you use whenever the moment strikes, so it should be able to capture stunning shots in any situation. The HTC One A9’s front and rear cameras, coupled with powerful yet simple editing tools, mean epic photos and videos are only a tap away. Its main 13MP rear camera features Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), which automatically minimizes hand shake and corrects vibrations to give you a crystal-clear picture every time. Meanwhile, the front UltraPixel camera delivers the best self-portraits in any lighting condition, using HTC’s UltraPixel sensor to capture 300% more light than conventional smartphone cameras.

With the HTC One A9, no detail is too small. Offering an optional Pro mode to capture the perfect photo without being a photography expert, you can also save photos using RAW capture – a tool used by professional photographers – for an unmatched level of detail and post-shot editing flexibility. Or you can keep things simple with Photo Editor’s one-button enhancement feature, which automatically brightens colors and sharpens edges for unbelievably clear and crisp photos2.

Sometimes a still photo just isn’t enough. With the HTC One A9’s Hyperlapse editing tool you can speed up your videos to 12 times as fast for a dramatic time-lapse effect, creating an immersive video that perfectly captures the moments that matter. Speed through your video or use capture mode to edit in slow motion, highlighting those unforgettable memories. Or use HTC Zoe to easily and automatically mix your best shots and videos into one professional-looking highlight reel that can be shared with friends and family to tell the story of any moment from every angle.

Awesome audio: music the way it’s supposed to sound

Game changing audio has always been core to the HTC One family – the HTC One A9 delivers amazing sound quality, with HTC BoomSound™ integrated into the headset combined with Dolby Audio™ surround technology3, delivering immersive, vibrant sound that matches a live experience in your headphones by taking high-resolution audio to the next level4. With a built-in DAC that delivers audio at 24-bit, 192KHz quality – better than CD quality – it provides a richness and depth like you’ve never before heard from your music collection. A powerful high-output headphone amplifier, with double the output of other handsets, provides more power and dynamic range so you can hear every nuance of your favorite music, videos and games. Optional high-resolution audio certified HTC Pro Studio Earphones deliver both noise isolation and truly immersive sound.

Cutting-edge software: Android 6.0 Marshmallow

The first non-Nexus smartphone powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the HTC One A9 brings Google’s latest innovations and the simplicity of HTC Sense right out of the box. Combined with a multi-directional fingerprint scanner, Android Pay makes purchasing items as secure and as easy as “tap, pay, done.”5 Google’s Now on Tap feature also intuitively provides contextual information about whatever is on your screen – look up reviews for a movie from a text, hear a song mentioned in a blog post, or book seats at a restaurant from an email, all at the press of the home button.

With so many new features, the HTC One A9 has also been designed with all new power-saving capabilities to maximize battery life. Doze automatically turns off power hungry applications when your phone is left idle, such as when charging overnight, while App Standby knows when an app open in the background isn’t being used and shuts it down until you need it again. In addition, the phone’s new processor, AMOLED screen and support for the optional HTC Rapid Charger 2.0, for up to 75% faster charging6 are all optimized to maximize battery life throughout the day7. In real terms this means, for example, that you can play 12 hours of HD video on one charge.

Performance designed for the way YOU use your phone

Featuring the newest Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 617 processor with integrated X8 LTE and 64-bit octa-core CPUs, the HTC One A9 is designed to deliver a perfect balance of powerful performance, fast connectivity and better battery life. With support for epic LTE wireless speeds through next-generation carrier aggregation technology, it delivers more high-definition streaming videos, more pulse-pounding high-resolution audio and more storage in the cloud to hold everything your heart desires. The phone is available in both 16 and 32GB configurations and features expandable memory, supporting up to 2TB in SD card storage, perfect for storing all your apps, games, photos, music and videos.

To protect your smartphone, pair it with the HTC Dot View™ II case, available in Obsidian, Deep Garnet, Sea Coral and Turquoise Blue. Its retro-inspired dot matrix cover reveals instant notifications, weather updates, caller ID and more, even while closed, and simple gesture controls bring music, flashlight, radio and voice recording tools closer than ever.

The HTC One A9 and accessories will be available worldwide, both at retailers and at htc.com, beginning November 2015.

U.S. Availability

In the U.S., the HTC One A9 will be available across multiple carriers and retailers. They will announce colors, availability and pricing for their respective channels. In addition, HTC will be making a special Unlocked edition available on www.HTC.com. This edition will be SIM Unlocked and will also allow you to unlock the bootloader without voiding your warranty, giving our customers an even greater level of freedom. And, in order for customers to experience our best-in-class sound quality, this version will come with 6 months of unlimited music on Google Play Music and UH OH Protection, which includes one free replacement within the first 12 months of ownership for a cracked screen, water damage or carrier switch. You can pre-order the HTC One A9 on htc.com today for a special, limited time promotional price of $399.99 and it will be available in Opal Silver and Carbon Gray initially. Deep Garnet and Topaz Gold will be made available in the coming weeks.

HTC is Announcing the One A9 Today, Watch the Event Live Here!

The HTC One A9 will arrive officially today during a livestreamed event from the Taiwanese manufacturer at 9AM Pacific (Noon Eastern). HTC has told us that this isn’t a “traditional” launch event, so who knows how this will go down. What I can tell you is that we will eventually have our hands-on this thing – stay tuned for that.

During this livestream, we are sort of expecting to see a phone that many (including myself) have dubbed HTC’s iPhone 6 clone. Call it unfair, but even a quick glance at the phone above should leave you fully understanding where we are coming from. With that said, the specs are rumored to include a 5-inch 1080p display, 2GB RAM, mid-range Snapdragon processor, 13MP rear camera, 4MP front camera (likely UltraPixel), really small battery, and a fingerprint reader. Oh, it should also be the first non-Nexus phone to launch with Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

As you can tell from those rumored specs, this is shaping up to be a mid-range phone, unless HTC has some hidden tricks up their sleeves that we just don’t know about.

Either way, we’ll know soon!
