YouTube Rewind 2014 Is Here And Full Of Ice Buckets, Frozen And Selfies

rewind

A lot of readers will know about this already, but for those that do not, then it is worth taking a couple of sentences to bring them up to speed. Back in 2010 YouTube started doing their Rewind videos as a means to close out the year. These began as just like a medley of popular videos fused together and highlighting anything that was trending or popular over that year. However, in the small space of time between 2010 and now they have undergone quite the revolution and are quickly becoming an entity on to themselves. More recently, the YouTube Rewind videos have been a mad and fast collection of popular YouTube stars recreating a number of the years big events and trends.

Well, if you haven’t already guessed (or seen it) then it is that time of year. YouTube this morning unleashed their latest Rewind video for this year and it is quite something. The video is as you would expect an extravaganza of memories with both popular YouTube stars like PewDiePie and also a collection of TV stars like John Oliver and Jimmy Kimmel. Actually, the line-up (and general presentation) is not that different to what was on offer last year in the YouTube ‘What Does 2013 Say?’, That said, it is here, it is great and deserves a watch.

To give you a quick rundown the video does include a lot of stuff that will make you think, oh right yeah I remember that. Like for instance, the Ice Bucket Challenge, selfies, Frozen and that weird video with the two people who shared their first kiss with the world. Remember that? Again, consistent with last year the soundtrack is pretty sweet as well, with various mash-ups of this year’s most popular songs. For instance, you might be sick of Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy’ by now, but nevertheless, there can be no denying that it was one of the biggest songs of this year. A few others to namedrop include ‘All About That Bass’ by Meghan Trainor and ‘Let It Go’ from the Frozen soundtrack. All in all, it is a fun look back on everything we liked (and hated) about 2014. So what are you waiting for? Hit play below.

T-Mobile to launch new set of holiday deals

T-Mobile_Logo_01_TA T-Mobile is reportedly launching a new set of deals for the rest of the holiday season, and if the rumors end up being true, some of the offers are pretty exciting. There are device discounts, plus some limited time plans for new and current customers.

If you’re interested in picking up a Galaxy S 5, the Uncarrier will be offering the device at a full $100 off retail. It’s currently 50 bucos off for the holidays, but another 50 means you can snag Samsung’s flagship for $560. That’ll come out around 23 dollars per month if you go for T-Mobile’s equipment installment plan.

As far as plans and pricing go, the company is offering some bold multi-line deals. Two users can get completely unlimited data for just $100 per month, excluding the cost of devices. That’s about $40 off the current price of that plan. For the same price, customers can activate 4 lines for $100 per month with 3 GB of data, which is 500 megabytes higher than a similar deal that’s been offered.

As a side note, not all of the changes tomorrow will be good. The SIM card starter kit is going up to $15 instead of $10, but since that’s still a relatively small one-time fee, hopefully it doesn’t spoil the other great deals they’ll be offering. All of these changes should go live tomorrow, December 10th.

[Deal] HTC One (M8) price slashed, Motorola DROID Turbo with gift card through Best Buy

HTC_One_M8_Back_Duo_Camera_TA_02

There are two great promotions going on right now at Best Buy. The electronics retailer is discounting one of the year’s best handsets while attaching a gift card to a newcomer with serious benefits.

The discount is for the HTC One (M8) and puts $170 back in customers’ pockets. Normally, the flagship HTC device is priced at $199 with a two-year contract, but Best Buy has the One (M8) for just $30. Carrier variants from Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint are eligible and the retailer has a multitude of color options.

The other promotion involves the DROID Turbo from Motorola. The handset, which is exclusive to Verizon, includes a gift card worth $100 or $150 depending upon the purchase method. For existing Verizon customers, the DROID Turbo comes with a $100 gift card for upgrading an existing line by signing a two-year contract or joining the Edge program. The $150 gift card is for new lines/customers picking up the DROID Turbo. This promotion ends on December 13.

Verizon And T-mobile Are Planning Another Spectrum Swap And Await FCC Approval

AH Verizon Logo 2.0

While the AWS-3 Spectrum auction is in full swing with bids now reaching $42 billion, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless are turning part of their attention to other spectrum dealings, as they have both agreed to swap some more spectrum and are awaiting the decision of the FCC on the deal. While the last time T-Mobile was involved in a spectrum deal with Verizon it included them buying up a portion of Verizon’s then A-Block spectrum, this time around it appears that the two companies will not be buying up set portions or be letting go of any cellular assets or customers, nor will either company get any more spectrum than they already own, it will be a straight swap of the exact same amount for different types of spectrum that will benefit the other carrier.

According to T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless this swap of ASW and PCS spectrum will help them enhance their network. The petition is for the swap of spectrum licenses in 92 countries and/or 41 cell networks within the United States, and would see “each carrier gain the ability to hold larger blocks of contiguous spectrum and/or align spectrum blocks with those already held in adjacent markets.” After the deal is over and if the FCC approves it in the first place, T-Mobile would end up holding 30 to 102 MHz of spectrum in total, while Verizon would end up holding 52 to 127 MHz of spectrum in total.

Now that the FCC has received the request from these two carriers, petitions to deny must be completed and are due by January 5th. Come January 15th, oppositions are due, and a reply must be completed near the end of the month on January 23rd. That gives the FCC around a little more than a month and half to decide on the approval. In addition to the news about a possible 2nd spectrum swap between T-Mobile and the nation’s largest wireless carrier of the major four, T-mobile has also today introduced a new simple choice plan for families which starts at $100 a month for two lines, and includes completely unlimited everything. That plan follows the trend of industry shakeups and aggressive values that Verizon had earlier stated was a big part of the reasoning behind their expected negative impact on earnings per share in the most recent quarter.

Sprint MVNO Ting To Offer GSM Service Alongside CDMA Come February 2015

Ting-ThumbTing has attracted many customers with its low-cost, pay-for-what-you-use tier-based approach to mobile service (give me a second, I'm sure I could fit more hyphens into this sentence), but some have been put off by the company's reliance on the Sprint network. Starting in February 2015, folks will have a choice. Ting will start offering a GSM option for people who just want to pop a SIM card into their existing unlocked phone.

T-Mobile’s New Promo Plans Are Official, Announces “America’s Only Unlimited 4G LTE” Plan

AH T-Mobile TMO Logo 1.3

Earlier we reported about some possible promotions T-Mobile would be running on plans as well as other deals on smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S5, and potentially a free cell spot for those who activate new lines all starting tomorrow according to TMO News and their source. Although we have no idea if the deal on the S5 will be an offer nor do we know anything official about the cell spot yet, when it comes to the promotional plans we mentioned which includes the return of T-Mobile’s popular 4 for $100 promotional deal as well as a 2 for $100 promotional deal which would give customers two lines on the same plan for $100 a month and completely unlimited everything, those are now official as T-Mobile has just recently made the announcement, with what T-Mobile is calling the “America’s Only Unlimited 4G LTE” plan.

This is already good news, but T-Mobile isn’t just giving us unlimited everything for two lines, they’re expanding the savings to everyone on the whole family by offering the same set of features to additional users up to a total of 10, and they’re offering multi-line discounts to sweeten the deal. Additional users on the plan past the original 2 will now only be $40 per line, which could end up fairly expensive if you had a full roster of 10 people on the plan, but when compared to the exact same services on competing carriers, you begin to see the difference and the savings. If you wanted the same thing from Sprint, it would cost you a maximum of $320 a month, while Verizon is set at $360, and AT&T is actually less than Sprint at $280, although neither Verizon or AT&T actually offer unlimited data on their More Everything or More Shared data plans.

The plans will start tomorrow just as we stated they might in our earlier post, but something new we didn’t know at the time is that there is no planned expiration date for these plans so if consumers sign up for it, as long as they keep everyone that’s on the plan at unlimited everything they’ll be allowed to keep the promotional pricing, even after the promo offers end. If you use a lot of data, we would consider giving this promotion plan a look. If you aren’t already a T-Mobile customer would this promo get you to switch?

Lollipop Version of Android Wear Rumored to Launch Tomorrow!

LG-G-Watch-R-AH-1lg g wat

We knew that when Android Wear launched earlier this year – back at Google I/O – that we’d see a whole lot more functionality coming out of Android Wear when Lollipop came out. Although at that time it was Android L. Now that Android 5.0 – Lollipop has been out for a little over a month, many of us are salivating at getting the newest version of Android Wear on our smartwatches. According to a leak coming out of Phandroid today, it appears that Android Wear might be getting it’s much awaited update as soon as tomorrow. Which is a pretty big deal.

So what kind of changes are we expecting in this update? Well one of those things is better Battery life. But that we kind of expect in just about every update these days. Additionally, we’re looking at new watchfaces using the watchface API. Currently, Watchfaces run as a separate app, unless it’s one of the included watch faces. Which is why your smartwatch’s battery life is not so good when using one of those watchfaces. With the Watchface API, that should be fixed. You’ll also gain the ability to regain lost or dismissed cards, There’s also a new quick brightness toggle, and OK Google will also reorder options based on what you use the most. Making it a much easier process of using your smartwatch.

All of these changes should affect all Android Wear smartwatches, including the Moto 360, LG G Watch, LG G Watch R, Samsung Gear Live, ASUS Zenwatch and the Sony Smartwatch 3. It’s unclear which smartwatches will get the update first. But looking at the past OTA’s for these smartwatches, the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live will probably get first dibs with the others coming in the next few days. It’s also unclear if this update will only come to those that have Android 5.0 Lollipop already or not, seeing as many things in this OTA will need Lollipop to work, it would make sense. We’ll keep an eye on it and see what happens though.

How many of you are excited to get this update for your Android Wear smartwatch? Let us know in the comments down below.

Google Partners With Globant To Offer Module/Hardware Store For Project Ara

Project Ara 3

It’s been a short while since we’ve heard anything new with Google’s Project Ara smartphone, the modular smartphone being developed and tested by their ATAP division which they acquired from Motorola as part of the Motorola acquisition, and kept after selling Motorola to Lenovo. While Google is making steady progress with the Project Ara smartphone advancement, it appears that they will be taking on some new partners to help with things in the marketplace area. Today Google has announced that they will be partnering with technology services provider Globant to serve as the hub for any hardware and modules for the Project Ara smartphones upon release.

There’s no doubt Google was going to have a need for some place they could sell the pieces that make up Project Ara devices, which includes the modules, and of course the other hardware like the screen, and even the base of the phone. There has been talk amongst community enthusiasts that Google could possibly sell the module pieces as well as the hardware base of the phone through the Play Store in the “Devices” section, which isn’t too hard to believe since they already sell plenty of devices there, but it appears Globant will take over the role of the main place to go for buying these items.

The store that Globant sets up for Project Ara buyers will not only give them a place to make their purchases on hardware and related products, but much like Google offers with the Play Store the goal is to have it set up to allow for reviews by consumers as well as a recommendation system that lets people know what real consumers think of what they’ve just bought. Globant has been working with Google since 2006, as their CEO and Co-Founder states that “This represents a new milestone in Globant’s on-going partnership with Google and we are very excited to be part of such an innovative project.” In addition to this news, the Project Ara team has announced that they will be showing off their go-to-market pilot plans at the upcoming Developers Conference in January of 2015, which is just around the corner. The idea of the store is to have it work much like the Play Store, where consumers have direct access to the products as well as the module and hardware developers themselves, similar to relationship between the app and game developers and users within the Play Store. This should make things much smoother. What do you think of Google’s ideas for the Project Ara module/hardware marketplace?

T-Mobile To Begin A Handful Of Promos Tomorrow Including $100 Off The Samsung Galaxy S5

AH T-Mobile TMO Logo 2.5

Tis the season for deals and the rumor is that T-Mobile is answering the call with a set of new promotions for customers this month. Said to be starting tomorrow December 10th, T-Mobile could be launching new promotions aimed at savings across multiple areas, from phones, to plans, and even the T-Mobile cell spot. As we stated these are just rumors at this point so don’t take them as a definite deal that you’ll be able to walk into your local retailer and take advantage of. However since the rumor states these deals will start tomorrow you won’t be waiting long to figure out what T-Mobile has on offer.

According to the source T-Mobile will be offering a deal on purchasing the Samsung Galaxy S5, allowing customers to save $100 when they purchase the device. This would appear to be a direct savings as T-Mobile is said to be bringing down the price of the Galaxy S5, instantly saving you $100 off the retail cost whether your make the purchase in store or online, and bringing the total cost for the customer to $560. Alongside the S5 deal T-mobile is also reportedly setting up some plan promotions, starting with 4 lines for $100, and a data bucket allowance of shared data at 12GB, or 4GB per line for internet use.

T-Mobile will also reportedly be offering customers a 2 lines for $100 promotional plan, where they get a completely unlimited 4G LTE plan with unlimited talk, text, and data. At the moment this pricing (that’s $100 for 2 lines on the same plan) only comes with 3GB of data so completely unlimited for the same cost is an outright steal. The new 2 for $100 that supposedly starts tomorrow also comes with a 5GB monthly tethering allotment, a Rhapsody unRadio subscription, unlimited music streaming and all the other benefits of simple choice plans. Normally these features for 2 lines on the same plan would cost about $140, so T-Mobile is giving the monthly cost a huge discount here if this promo is for real. Lastly they’re also supposedly offering free cell spot routers to any account holders that start up a new line activation. If you’re planning on switching to T-Mobile or you’re an existing customer, we’d recommend going down to your local store tomorrow and talking things over with a rep.

Samsung SM-E500F Pops Up On Samsung Mobile Website

Samsung Galaxy Alpha

Samsung have come in for a lot of criticism over the last year, encompassing everything from unashamedly plastic designs to launching many, many different handsets and crowding out the market. We’ve seen that the company is capable of designing beautiful devices in a metallic chassis in the shape of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha and, more recently, the Galaxy A3 and A5 devices. We’ve also seen some new handsets popping up across the world including the SM-E500F, which at the time we speculated might be an E-series of some sorts. And now, whilst still in the rumor-camp, it looks like the SM-E500 device is being prepared for launch as a mid-range device. In this respect, it’ll be similar to the A5; mid-range number, mid-range device.

As far as specifications go, we’re expecting this device to have a screen of 5.0-inches in diagonal and be 720p resolution. This makes it similar to the 2014 Moto G in size and resolution; it’s not the crispest display around there, but having a relatively low resolution screen will help performance and battery life. Writing of performance, we’re expecting it to run a 1.2 GHz processor but it’s unclear the processor type. I’d put money on it being a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon and if I’m right, the question is: did Samsung use the newer generation 64-bit Snapdragon 410? Or to keep costs down, did they opt for the older generation (and still commendable) 32-bit Snapdragon 400? I would hope that Samsung would go with the 64-bit 410 as this is overall good news for the industry. Unfortunately, this is all the information we have at present: we don’t know the camera, radio technologies or battery size. Nor do we know what could differentiate the E-series (presumably this is going to be the E5?) from the A-series, but if I had to guess I’d say that it’s in the chassis material and build. Perhaps the E-series is wholly plastic and considered a cheaper alternative to the A-series? Maybe it will have a lesser camera and drops 4G LTE?

What do our readers think? Is there room in the Samsung Galaxy line up for an inexpensive model? I’d say that there is, but Samsung are running the risk of having an inexpensive E-series, an expensive A-series and then wondering where to put the S-series? Even more expensive?

Vsenn’s Module Smartphone Offering Pick Your Own Operating System

vsenn

I love the idea of a modular handset, one that allows me to pick and choose what particular hardware specification I’d like from a device. And there are two businesses working on modular devices at the moment: Google with Project Ara and Vsenn. Both of these will allow the buyer to swap in and out different hardware components; in the case of Vsenn, we’ll be able to pick the camera, battery and processor / RAM combination. That sounds great: if I want to combine a modest camera module (or even no camera) with a mid-range processor but a big battery, I can do this. Later on I can buy a high-end camera or a smaller battery, if I want a slimmer design. Now… how about being able to support multiple operating systems? We’ve already seen HTC try this with the HTC One for Windows, which takes the One M8 hardware and installs Windows Phone onto the device (and in one fell swoop, eclipses all of Nokia Microsoft’s handsets) and now Vsenn are offering their modular smartphone with a choice of software in addition to the Android option (with it’s intriguing four-year upgrade promise).

Vsenn is asked for people to engage with the business and has offered three choices at the moment, these being Sailfish OS, Firefox OS and Ubuntu, offered as part of the ARP (Approved ROM Program). There’s no word on Tizen at the moment. Vsenn’s only requirements from another ROM is that it’s stable and high performance; otherwise, OS developers can offer anything they like. Vsenn will offer full tech support, unlocked bootloaders and even financial assistance. In their own words, “Vsenn will officially provide [developers with] monetary donations, test devices, server space and bandwidth for the Vsenn devices ROMs.” That’s not a bad deal for software developers at all! If you’re interested, hit up the source cited at the end of the article.

For the three choices, we already know that Sailfish OS will run Android applications whereas Firefox OS works using web applications. Ubuntu is perhaps the most interesting as if successfully deployed, it could turn the Vsenn into something approaching a desktop-class computer that fits into our pockets if we’re able to dock our smartphone and connect it with a keyboard, mouse, monitor and other peripherals. This may be the lifeline that Ubuntu Touch (the smartphone optimized version of Ubuntu) needs, as we discussed here. Ubuntu needs vendor support, and probably 32 GB of internal storage, to succeed. But over to our readers: what do you think? Do you like the idea of having a modular smartphone in both the hardware and software respects? Let us know in the comments below.

DocuSign Announce The Launch Of An Integrated DTM Chrome Extension

DocuSign_tag

There are many benefits to having integration between your online services and products. Firstly, ease of what you are doing (or trying to do) is greatly enhanced. Secondly, as technology evolves and services overlap more and more, there seems little point in services being so mutually exclusive. This seems to be a notion understood by DocuSign. If you are unfamiliar with DocuSign, then it is what’s known as a Digital Transaction Management (DTM) system. As the name of the company suggests, DocuSign allows you to sign documents, but digitally. As a result, documents can be easily processed and then sent to where they need to be and when they need to be. The service offered is a legal one and as such there are no issues with signing digitally, regardless of the content.

If you are the type of user who needs to be able to sign documents on the go or electronically, then you will be pleased to know that DocuSign has today announced the launch of a DTM extension for Chrome. Once installed and integrated, the extension works seamlessly with various well-known services like Gmail, Dropbox and so on, allowing in-program processing. To give you an example, this extension will allow users to open, access and sign documents from within Gmail or Dropbox, instead of having to be redirected to the third party service. If you are a mover and shaker, then this is likely to save you money as well as time. The other added benefit of the integration of DocuSign is that you can set reminders to keep you up to date with the documents you need to sign (or send) without forgetting.

In short, the DocuSign DTM is an ideal way to go (and more importantly, stay) paperless when working online. All files are accessible and ready when you need them, signed when you plan to and sent where they need to go and all without touching a piece of paper. Similar to how other Chrome extensions work (and as you can see in the images below), the service is simple to use once installed. Small icons appear in your frequently used programs, when you have a DocuSign document available (or reminder set). As such, you hit the icon, open the document (in your program), sign it, save it, send it, done. If you want to know more about the DocuSign Chrome extension then click here to read the announcement or click here to head over to the Chrome extension listing.

Google shows circuit board for Project Ara Spiral 2 prototype

The Project Ara Module Developers Conference will be held in January to show how far the modular device program is coming along. The item above will also be present at the conference next month. What is it? That is the circuit board being used in the Project Ara Spiral 2 prototype. The Google ATAP team will have more to say about the component at the conference.

Google wants to make sure many people have a chance to interact with Project Ara in January. So for people that cannot attend the conference, event sites will be hosted throughout the world. Mountain View, Buenos Aires, London, and New York will all have events on January 14. And on January 21, Singapore, Bangalore, Shanghai, Taipei, and Tokyo will have Project Ara events of their own.

Events will also be livestreamed on the Project Ara site and you can sign-up to be notified about that as well.

T-Mobile announces Unlimited Data Family plan for $100

T-Mobile_store_610x407

Just when you thought John Legere n’ friends were going to give Verizon and AT&T a break for the holidays, the #4 largest carrier in the US (that’s T-Mobile) announced a new Family Plan that’s sure to make the big dogs squirm.

The new family plan gives customers unlimited talk, text, and data for only $100 (that’s 2 lines), undercutting family plans offered by anyone in US by a huge margin. Data sippers with larger families will also find the 4-line $100 family plan making a return, and comes with 10GB for everyone to share.

The new plans will be offered to both existing and new customers starting tomorrow and we can’t wait to see how Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint launch their counter offensive.

What We Use 2014: The Stuff Michael Can't Live Without

trekthumb Howdy. The name's Michael Crider, and I hope you've noticed that I've been hanging around here for the last year or so. I'm a web writer and general geek, born in Texas and now living in Colorado Springs. How I came to work for Android Police over the last 12 months (or possibly a bit longer) is a long and boring story.

Here's the bullet points you need to get context on the following exploration of my stuff: my dad was a computer engineer who worked for General Dynamics and Lockheed back in the 80s, and so I've been surrounded by varying bits of technology for essentially my entire life.

What We Use 2014: The Stuff Michael Can't Live Without was written by the awesome team at Android Police.
