Google Play celebrates 3rd birthday with deals on apps, music, movies and more

Google Play is another year older, and that can only mean one thing — sales! Google is discounting a bundle of apps, games, music, moves, books and more from Google Play to celebrate their third year of, well, being.

Albums like Drake’s Thank Me Later can be had for just $.99, while all three movies in the latest Batman trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan can be had for $2.99 each. You’ll also get apps like Runtastic and Facetune for $.10, and the entire first season of Breaking Bad for just $9.99.

Overheat Warning Pops Up On HTC One (M9) While Running AnTuTu Benchmark App At MWC

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) is still on its way and many companies from all over the world are showcasing their products in Barcelona. We’ve seen a lot of great tech thus far, and the show still has a lot to offer it seems. As you probably recall, both HTC and Samsung have introduced their new flagship devices two days ago, HTC unveiled the One (M9) and Samsung showcased both the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge which have been leaking all over the internet for a while now. That being said, these handset don’t sport the same processors, HTC’s flagship is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core chip, while Samsung decided to use their proprietary 14nm Exynos 7420 64-bit octa-core unit.

Reports started coming in last December saying that Qualcomm’s chip has overheating issues, also claiming that Samsung won’t use that chip for that exact reason, and it seems like Samsung really has no intentions of releasing the Snapdragon variant of the Galaxy S6 nor the Galaxy S6 Edge, at least they didn’t say anything about that thus far. Now, back to the overheating claims, both Qualcomm and LG denied such claims, saying that the Snapdragon 810 works just fine and does not overheat, but a new directly from MWC claims just the opposite. According to a report from mobilissimo.ro portal, HTC One (M9) had some issues running benchmarks at the MWC show floor in Barcelona. One of the portal’s employees ran AnTuTu benchmarks on the One (M9) and the phone was unable to complete the process it seems (image above). A warning popped up saying the following: “The device temperature is too high. Please test again after cooling the device. Continue testing may cause the system to restart or shut down.”

On one hand, this really doesn’t have to mean anything, perhaps the device was in function for way too long with screen being on all the time, which could affect this problem. Perhaps it’s HTC’s fault, and it’s something that the company can fix via software update. There’s always a possibility this is a faulty unit and so on. On the other hand, however, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 SoC might really have issues with overheating, though it seems weird we haven’t seen such problems coming from the G Flex 2 thus far, one would think that internet’s full of images showing the very same thing.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge’s base model could start at 64GB in the UK

An interesting revelation was made over at Samsung’s site for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. While the company mentioned that 32GB, 64GB and 128GB options for the phones would be available, they’re listing the Edge variant with just 64GB and 128GB options for the UK. That could suggest the Edge variant will come with 64GB as standard.

One plausible explanation could be that the S6 Edge will have a higher base cost than the normal edition so Samsung decided it would be best to give people more for their money. We’ve seen that pricing model in the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note Edge so it wouldn’t be a shock to see it repeated here.

Of course, we could just be jumping way ahead of ourselves and this could all be a mistake. It’s also worth remembering that this could specifically be for the UK and we might not see the same structuring for other markets. We’ll do our darnedest to find out from Samsung themselves, though, and will update this post if we find out anything more.

MWC 2015: Hands-On With ZTE’s High-End Phablet, The Nubia X6

ZTE has introduced their Grand S3 handset at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, a device which features EveVerify’s EyePrint ID biometric solution. We’ve already covered the launch of that device, and got some hands-on time with ZTE’s flagship, the Nubia Z7. It’s time to take a look at one other ZTE-branded device, the Nubia X6 which launched in March 2014 and is available since April. This phablet is on display at ZTE’s MWC booth where were able to get some hands-on time with it, as you can see in a bunch of images down below. Check out those images if you’d like to take a closer look at the Nubia X6’s design and what not, and we’ll talk a little bit about this device’s specs.

The Nubia X6 is a rather odd device, this is a phablet handset which sports a huge screen on the front, a 6.44-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) IPS LCD panel. This handset comes in two variants, the one with 2GB of RAM, and the higher-end 3GB RAM variant. As far as storage options go, the 2GB variant is available with 32 and 64GB of internal storage, while the 3GB variant comes in only the 128GB flavor. Anyhow, this thing sports a 13-megapixel snapper on the back (OIS, dual-LED flash), and a 13-megapixel shooter on its front side. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 quad-core processor is powering on this device, and the device ships with a non-removable 4,250mAh battery. The Nubia X6 measures 179.5 x 89 x 7.9mm and weighs 215 grams. This is a dual-SIM device which comes with support for 4G LTE connectivity.

The ZTE Nubia X6 is the company’s high-end phablet which is available in White and Gold color options, and prices will vary depending on where you purchase this thing, keep in mind that it’s not cheap though. Let us know if you like this phablet in the comments.

MWC 2015: Hands-On With Archos 52 Platinum, One Of Company’s New New Mid-Rangers

Archos has unveiled a couple of handsets at the ongoing MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona. We’ve already covered the announcements and the hands-on with the Archos 50 Oxygen+, and are here now to take a look at the other Archos mid-ranger, the Archos 52 Platinum. This thing is rather similar to the 50 Oxygen+, but somewhat different. Anyhow, there are a bunch of hands-on photos of this device in the gallery down below, so take a look at those if you’re interested. This handset is made out of plastic, and it has 3 capacitive buttons below the display, multitasking, home and back (from left to right. It’s design is kind of industrial and it has the Nexus 4-like metal-looking trim around, as you can see down below.

The Archos 52 Platinum comes with a 5.25-inch 720p (1280 x 720) IPS display, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. You can expand its in-built storage via microSD card up to 64GB, if that’s something you need, of course. MediaTek’s MT6582 quad-core SoC clocked at 1.3GHz is powering on this device along with the Mali 400MP2 GPU which is here for graphics processing. On the back of this handset you’ll find an 8-megapixel snapper flanked by an LED flash, while there’s a 2-megapixel shooter located up front. 1,750mAh battery will ship with this device, and Android 4.4 KitKat is pre-installed here (stock version, basically). This is a dual SIM (1 x Mini SIM and 1 x Micro SIM) handset and it comes with 3G connectivity support.

This handset is still not available, but it will be soon according to Archos, though the company didn’t provide us with specific information as far as availability goes. The Archos 50 Platinum will cost $145 once it gets released, and we assume it will be available in Europe, starting this or next month.
