Samsung Showcases Company’s Flexible, Rollable Battery For Wearables

Samsung's Flexible Battery InterBattery 2014_2

Despite having completely different business models, Apple and Samsung are also similar in some ways. It seems like people either love these companies or hate them, at least that’s what I’m getting based on their reactions. I’m not trying to generalize, of course, but there are many people who have strong feeling towards these companies, being positive or negative. That being said, Samsung is one of those companies which invest tons and tons of cash into their R&D (Research and Development) department. That department made it possible for Samsung to introduce devices like the first Galaxy Note, introduce their AMOLED panel and improve upon it over the years and even launch the quite recent Galaxy Note Edge device considering that required the company do develop rounded display. Samsung had all kinds of crazy ideas over the years, but they also produced lots of useful devices, components… and by doing that actually brought something truly innovative to the table. Samsung’s SDI branch is pushing battery technology forward and it seems they came to a significant breakthrough.

Samsung seems to have developed a flexible, rollable battery which is designed for wearables. Samsung SDI unveiled the next generation of flexible batteries during the InterBattery 2014 exhibition in Seoul, Korea. These batteries can actually be rolled, Samsung used structural designed and improved materials in order to create these batteries and make them so flexible. This is all great and stuff, but this technology is not ready for mass production just yet. The company needs to improve the reliability of these batteries int he coming years, so we won’t be seeing of those in a smartwatch (for example) anytime soon. The reports are claiming it will take at least 3 years for Samsung to make these batteries ready for mass production. Samsung SDI also showed off a pin-type battery which measures only 20 x 3.6mm and boasts a capacity of 10mAh. This is also quite impressive and promising, this basically means they’ll be able to stuff a more powerful batteries in a smaller space in the future. Batteries are a huge issue when it comes to today’s smartphones and significant improvements are needed, it seems like Samsung is on the right path.

LG Posts Largest Gain In Share Of Android Web Traffic Beating Amazon and Motorola

AH LG G3 2014 -21 LG LOGO

While it’s no secret that Samsung owns the lion’s share of the Android smartphone market, there are several other companies who continue to grow in their quest to rival Samsung’s dominance. LG is one of these companies and due to its previous two flagship devices, the G2 and G3, being well received by both critics and consumers alike it has recently achieved some benchmarks that should give them reason to celebrate. Their latest flagship, the G3, was released earlier this year and according to sales figures it will be their first device ever to sell more than 10 million units. The success of the G3 should come as no surprise as it was met with widespread acclaim upon its release due to its great display, battery life, and build quality. Today, LG has something else to be proud of as it was reported that LG posted the largest gains in Android web traffic in North America since June.

Chitka Inc. is a Massachusetts based firm that tracks trends in internet usage and, as you can see in their graph seen below, while Samsung manufactured the vast majority of Android devices in the U.S. and Canada going online it was LG that posted the largest gains in internet usage in the period between June and September of this year. LG devices accounted for 10.4% of all Android smartphones and tablets that accessed the internet during the month of September which was an increase from 8.7% in June, representing a total increase of 1.7%. Samsung, on the other hand, saw a decrease in its share of Android web traffic falling from 57.4% to 56.4%. Samsung wasn’t the only one to see decreases, however, as several other Android smartphone manufactures including HTC and Google also tallied lower numbers.

As mentioned earlier, their G3 flagship has posted the best ever sales for LG and this is, most likely, what accounts for their gains in overall share of Android web traffic. Were you one of those people who bought one of the approximately 10 million G3’s that were sold this year? Are you as big a fan of the device as our editors here at Android Headlines? HTC D820us Pops Up On AnTuTu, MediaTek’s MT6752 Processor And 2GB Of RAM Included

AH Desire 820 3

As you all know, HTC has been having issues turning a profit in the last… well, a long time. HTC One M8 somewhat helped, but after the initial hype was over they fell into problem again. HTC decided to cut costs and it seems that worked for the company. They managed to beat estimates and actually turn profit in Q3 this year. That won’t do the company much good if they don’t find a way to move more units in the future. No doubt HTC makes great devices, this Taiwanese company is well-known for its design quality and great software, but unfortunately they don’t sell as many devices as they need to sell. HTC has recently announced the Desire 816 and Desire 820 (along with their variations) as well as the Desire Eye, which is a rather odd smartphone. HTC is trying to differentiate and probably hopes that will help them increase their profit. They also introduced the RE Camera alongside the Desire Eye, but let’s focus on smartphones.

From time to time AnTuTu, GeekBench or GFXBench show us specs of a device which haven’t even been mentioned just, and that’s exactly what happened now. It seems like HTC si preparing yet another version of the Desire 820, after announcing the Desire 820 and Desire 820q in India (Desire 816G was also launched alongside these devices). AnTuTu shows us partial specs of a D820us model (the device featured in an image above is the original Desire 820). These specs reveal that this device will be powered by MediaTek’s MT6752 64-bit octa-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz which comes with the Mali-T760 GPU. The device will allegedly sport a 5.5-inch 720p (1280 x 720) display along with 2GB of RAM for your multitasking needs and will ship with Android 4.4.4 which basically means it will come with HTC’s Sense 6 UI on top of it. The listing also says that 13-megapixel camera will be this handset’s primary shooter while you’ll be able to find an 8-megapixel snapper on the front of the device.

We don’t have any information about the launch date of this device nor where it might launch, but I guess this device is meant for Chinese or Indian market. I could be wrong though, this could be HTC’s way to lower the cost of their smartphones (MediaTek chip) and actually launch it in some already established markets as well, though I doubt that. This isn’t HTC’s first MediaTek phone though, the aforementioned Desire 816G also shipped with a MediaTek chip on the inside.

Hugo Barra: Xiaomi Will Manufacture An Android One Device In The Future

AH Xiaomi Logo 1.5

Xiaomi is slowly but surely building its brand around the world. This smartphone manufacturer has put to shame brands like Samsung in China and is a market leader in that Asian country. Xiaomi is close to starting its business in Brazil and will by doing that open up the whole South American market, which is the third largest market in the world I believe. Xiaomi has already conquered the biggest market in the world, their homeland. They’re doing rather well in the 2nd biggest market as well, India. Xiaomi has been selling phones like hotcakes over there, via Flipkart. Xiaomi Redmi 1S is high in demand over there, they usually sell about 100,000 in a matter of seconds. Russia is the next market Xiaomi plans to conquer, or at least start up business there.

That being said, many people have been wondering if Xiaomi intends to manufacture an Android One device, not only because it’s Xiaomi we’re talking about but because on of ex-Google employees is now an important figure at Xiaomi. I’m talking about Hugo Barra, who is currently a Vice President of International for Xiaomi. Mr. Barra said to Indian media that Xiaomi’s Android One handset is just a matter of time. He said that the company really wants this to happen and mentioned that Google has been working on Android One project for a long time. He also added that Xiaomi will focus on company’s existing product lines instead of opening new ones. After touching on the Android One topic, he turned to answering questions regarding the Indian market in specific. Mr. Barra said that Xiaomi is going to increase distribution of its devices in Indian market by mentioning that Redmi Note will arrive in India in December and Mi4, Mi TV and Mi SmartBand will follow early next year. He also added (even though he already mentioned this on Google+) that he hired Jai Mali from Google and he is not India’s Chief Product Manager.

It seems like Xiaomi means business as far as Indian market goes, which is a really smart move in my humble opinion. This Chinese manufacturer is aiming at the biggest markets in the world and they’re doing great thus far. Would you like to see Xiaomi’s manufacture an Android One device?

droid-turbo-red

Motorola Droid Turbo is shaping up to be the best-specced phone we’ve ever seen, when you look at the specifications of this thing and the device itself you get that geeky tingling inside. We’ve seen tons of rumors about this phone, first and foremost, this is Verizon’s device of course, Verizon is the only carrier that will offer it. Talking about that, Verizon will be holding an event on October 28th in order to unveil this thing. This time around we bring you 6 info pages which have been circulating amongst Verizon staff and along with those plenty Droid Turbo’s specifications, courtesy of Phone Arena.

According to these info pages, Droid Turbo will feature a 5.2-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) display with a 565 ppi pixel density. This device will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 processor clocked at 2.7GHz which is one of the most powerful chipsets currently available. 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage will also be included in this insanely specced package. On the back of the device, you’ll be able to find a 21-megapixel camera flanked by a dual LED flash. You might say that this is all nice and dandy, but the battery will probably suck. Well, you’d be wrong, it seems like this device will have a 3900mAh battery inside, a battery like this is basically a dream of every heavy smartphone user.

As far as its design goes, this device will come with a metal frame and Metallized Glass Fiber (MGF) material is also a part of this body. The back of the device is yet again reinforced with Kevlar fiber. This leaked material shows us the device in two colors, if you take a look at the gallery down below you’ll notice the black and the red version, both of which look great in my humble opinion. That’s not all, not by a long shot, Motorola will include Motorola Turbo Charger as part of this package which will get you up to 8 hours of use after just 15 minutes of charging. Up to 48 hours of power is also promised on a full charge.

As far as software goes, Motorola will include Moto Voice, Moto Actions, Moto Assist and Moto Display functions which are all quite useful. Best Shot and Highlight Reel will be here as far as imaging goes and they made sure some features are exclusive to this phone as well. Zap Zone, Zap TV and Zap with Voice will be exclusive to the Droid Turbo. You can read more about these in an image down below. This handset will support Verizon’s XLTE network, which is yet another great aspect of it.

This is a lot of information to take in, I’m sure, but I believe we’ll agree this is an insanely specced phone. Not only that, but it looks really great as well. Motorola really put some effort into this handset and it shows. I believe there are lots of you who’d like to get your hands on one of these, right?

Shuv App Partners With Sony Music To Offer Unique Ringtone Customization Experience

shuv 2

Everyone loves to have a personalized ring tone. Most often the ringtones that come with your smartphone can be a little boring so it makes sense that most people want to change it up. Some people use a song from their music library as their ringtone while others might download one of the plethora of apps that are available that offer customized ringtones. But, until now, there was no way to personalize the ringtone or notification sound that someone else hears on their device when you phone or text them. This is where a recently released app called Shuv comes in. Shuv is an app developed by Pink Stone LLC and Appetizer Mobile and is a voice and messaging app that allows you to choose the song, sound, or tone that other Shuv users in your contact list will hear when you contact them.

Shuv was just released this week for both Android and iOS and claims to be the first app of its kind. The app has its own sound library featuring a wide variety of songs and tones like “Happy Birthday” and “Evil Laugh”. Users can also “Shuv” their own voice recordings to their contacts. Shuv users are not restricted to the this library, however, as the app’s developers have also announced a partnership with Sony Music Entertainment that will allow users to choose from Sony’s vast catalogue of artists and songs. According to Chris Warnack, who is the founder and CEO of Pink Stone LLC, “Shuv empowers a caller to be as creative as they want to be when setting a ringtone to accompany a call or a picture, and with the incredible content from Sony Music, the choice of ringtones is truly amazing.”

Shuv is free to download but if you want the added feature of being able to access the Sony Music tracks it will cost you $1.99. As stated earlier, this only works if the person you are contacting is also a Shuv user, so if this seems like something you and your friends would enjoy then spread the word about the app and head to Google Play or the App store for the download.

Buying a Note 4? Don’t forget to check the freebies on Galaxy Gifts

galaxy gifts

We all know and loathe bloatware – nobody likes having their devices stuffed with apps they never use and subscriptions to services they never heard of. Worse, this cruft is often impossible to remove, at least not without rooting and losing warranty in the process.

That’s why it’s nice that Samsung has taken a different route for its recent flagship devices: instead of preloading a bunch of stuff on every device, Samsung has set up a Galaxy Gifts page from where you can sign up for freebies and a section on Samsung Apps where you can download/sign up for just the stuff you want.

In the case of the Galaxy Note 4, the virtual perk bag is quite consistent. Samsung hasn’t revealed the total value of the apps and services it offers to each Note 4 user, but it’s probably in the hundreds of dollars. Of course, that’s assuming you’d take advantage of everything, which is likely not the case.

Highlights include a 2-year 50GB Dropbox subscription, 6 months of Parallels Access, a full license of Sketchbook Pro, 3 months of OnLive, 3 months of Audible, 1 year subs to NYT and WSJ, and more.

Head over here to check the full list or visit the Galaxy Gifts section directly on the Galaxy Apps store. The deal is also good for the Galaxy Edge, though it will probably be a while before you can buy it.

Anything you plan taking advantage of? Will you buy the Note 4 when it goes on sale this Friday?
